NBA Free Agency Rumors: Lakers will let Lebron James walk?

The future of LeBron James may no longer center on retirement.

Instead, the growing question around the NBA is where the four-time champion will play next season.

Speaking on ESPN’s NBA Today on Monday, Lakers insider Dave McMenamin said “all indicators” point toward James continuing his NBA career following the Los Angeles Lakers’ looming playoff exit — though uncertainty remains about whether that future will still be in Los Angeles.

“This is the first time in his Laker career, eight years in, we’ll be going into a summer without a contract option with the Lakers, fully unrestricted free agent,” McMenamin said. “I would say all indicators say that he will continue playing NBA basketball, but the question is whether it will be in Los Angeles.”

That uncertainty has already fueled league-wide speculation, with former Lakers champion Danny Green openly wondering whether a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers could emerge as a realistic possibility.

The Lakers entered the 2026 postseason believing they had rediscovered championship momentum behind James, Austin Reaves, and (when healthy) superstar Luka Doncic. Instead, Los Angeles now finds itself on the brink of elimination against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder after being overwhelmed by a younger, deeper, and more athletic Western Conference powerhouse.

This disappointing exit comes at a critical juncture for LeBron. At 41 years old (he’ll turn 42 in December), he continues to defy Father Time, but the team around him has failed to provide consistent contention. With no contract option in place, LeBron holds full control over his basketball future for the first time since signing with the Lakers in 2018.

LeBron has repeatedly said he wants to play with his son Bronny, who is already on the Lakers roster. That desire has kept him in Los Angeles. However, if the Lakers cannot build a true contender around him quickly, the pull of returning “home” to Cleveland — where his career began and where he delivered a historic championship in 2016 — could become stronger than ever.

A return to the Cavaliers would reunite him with a young, talented core and give him one final chance to chase another ring in familiar territory. Other contenders in the East or even out West could also emerge as dark-horse suitors depending on how aggressively they pursue him.

LeBron James has earned the right to choose exactly how and where his legendary career ends. While retirement rumors have circulated for years, current indications suggest he still has more to give. The real drama this summer won’t be if he plays, but where.

The Lakers will almost certainly do everything in their power to retain him, but with full unrestricted free agency looming and another early playoff exit looming, LeBron has real leverage — and real options.
