It’s been an eventful few days for Jaylen Brown. On Saturday, with Jayson Tatum sidelined, he was tasked with leading the Boston Celtics in a winner-take-all Game 7 against rival Philadelphia 76ers. Despite carrying the No. 1 scoring load for much of the team’s 56-win season, Brown came up short in a 109-100 loss. A visibly frustrated Brown accused Joel Embiid of flopping afterward.
On Sunday, Brown took to Twitch and doubled down. He called Embiid one of the best big men in NBA history but added, “He flops. He knows it. This ain’t breaking news.” He also claimed officials had an “agenda” against him, citing 10 offensive fouls in the series, and suggested it was retaliation for his regular-season criticism of refereeing. Despite the painful exit, Brown called this his “favorite” season, praising the group while noting new career-highs in scoring (28.7 PPG), usage rate (36.2%), and more.
These raw comments have quickly turned into major trade rumor fuel — especially as the Celtics face significant roster and salary questions this offseason.
Brown’s emotion is completely understandable. This was his first year as the undisputed alpha scorer, and he embraced the challenge. Coming up short in such a high-stakes Game 7 after everything he poured into the season would frustrate anyone. His criticism of Embiid’s flopping echoes what many players and fans quietly think, and the offensive foul disparity clearly got under his skin.
That said, airing these grievances so publicly on Twitch right after elimination wasn’t the best look. It risks painting him as disgruntled and could complicate future contract or trade negotiations. While it humanizes Brown and shows how competitive he is, in today’s NBA, these types of comments rarely go unnoticed by front offices or the league.
In April, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that the Celtics were “known to be interested” in two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. At the time, it felt far-fetched with Boston as Eastern Conference favorites. But after this disappointing first-round exit, the idea has gained real traction. On Monday, Marc Stein named the Celtics as a team to watch in any Giannis sweepstakes.
Acquiring Antetokounmpo would almost certainly require including Brown or Tatum. Given Brown’s new comments and the Celtics’ cap constraints, he is suddenly more discussable in trade conversations than he was a week ago.
I don’t believe the Celtics are actively shopping Jaylen Brown right now — he remains a foundational piece and fan favorite. However, his post-elimination comments have undeniably widened the door for trade discussions. Boston has the young talent, future draft picks, and salary-matching flexibility to make a serious offer for Giannis if Milwaukee decides to move him. Whether Brown stays or is used as the centerpiece of a blockbuster deal could define the next era of Celtics basketball.
The 2026 offseason is already shaping up to be one of the most dramatic in recent memory for the franchise.
