NBA Trade Rumors: Denver will be force to trade Gordon?

The Denver Nuggets could consider trading Aaron Gordon after the team's first-round elimination by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Bennett Durando reported Saturday for the Denver Post.

According to Durando, Gordon "will no longer be considered off the table as a trade candidate when team brass meets to discuss next steps."

"Denver's first-round flame-out was disastrous enough that anyone other than [Nikola Jokić] could feasibly be shipped off," Durando wrote.

This marks a significant shift in tone for the Nuggets organization. For years, Aaron Gordon has been viewed as a key complementary piece alongside Nikola Jokić — a versatile forward known for his defense, athleticism, and ability to finish around the rim. However, after another early playoff exit, the front office appears ready to explore major changes.

Peyton Watson Remains a Top Priority

While Gordon’s future is now uncertain, another forward is expected to stay in Denver. The Nuggets view re-signing restricted free agent Peyton Watson as one of their "top priorities." Watson broke out in the 2025-26 season, posting career highs of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game across 54 contests.

NBA insider Jake Fischer previously named the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Brooklyn Nets as teams likely to make offers to Watson. Even if Denver matches any offer sheet, they may need to shed salary elsewhere due to severe cap constraints.

The Nuggets are projected to have just $2.6 million in space below the second luxury tax apron, according to Spotrac. Moving out contracts like Gordon ($32 million next season), Cameron Johnson ($23 million), or Christian Braun ($21.6 million) could create necessary flexibility.

Durando noted that in league circles, Cameron Johnson has been considered the most likely to be moved for months, but Gordon and Braun are now in similar salary territory and could also be available.

Jokić’s Blunt Assessment

The urgency for change became even clearer after Thursday’s Game 6 elimination loss to the Timberwolves. Following the defeat, Nikola Jokić said he felt the current roster was "far away" from competing for a championship.

That honest evaluation from the three-time MVP is likely to accelerate Denver’s willingness to make difficult decisions this offseason.

What’s Next for the Nuggets?

The 2026 offseason will be critical for Denver. After years of contending, the front office must decide whether to make incremental tweaks or pursue a more significant reset while Jokić remains in his prime. Trading Gordon would represent a major philosophical shift, but it could also bring back assets or better-fitting pieces to build around their superstar center.
