I’ve been saying this for years: when you combine corporate ownership and professional sports, logic completely goes out the window for the average fan.
On Wednesday night, the eighth-seeded TNT Tropang 5G upset the top-seeded NLEX Road Warriors, surviving the twice-to-beat disadvantage and forcing a do-or-die game. Immediately, the internet exploded. The conspiracy theorists came out of the woodwork. "The fix is in! NLEX let them win!"
Here’s the thing. This discussion was entirely predictable. TNT is the flagship team of the MVP group. They are the favorite child, the crown jewel of the corporate umbrella, while NLEX is the gritty overachiever. So when the flagship team is staring down elimination, the cynical fan immediately assumes there was a backroom corporate memo sent down to executive offices.
The internet detectives quickly pulled up the box score and pointed to Robert Bolick. "Look at this!" they screamed. "Bolick only took nine shots! Zero rebounds! He threw the game!"
Stop it. Let’s look closer at the actual data. Yes, Bolick deferred. But he also finished the game with a flat zero plus/minus. He wasn't out there actively tanking or hurting his team; he was navigating a hyper-aggressive defense that forced the ball out of his hands.
PBA veteran Vic Manuel took to social media to call out the nonsense, and he hit the nail right on the head:
"Basta ako till now! D ako naniniwala n scripted ang PBA! Depende nlng kung my isang mg sasalita s taas n totoo yan. Pgdating kc ng playoffs! Pera pera n usapan jan. Bunos! Kahit sister team p yan. Godbless!"
Vic is 100% right. This is a business. When the playoffs hit, we are talking about player bonuses, families, and individual legacies. Professional athletes aren't throwing away hard-earned bonus checks and tanking their own careers just to satisfy a corporate hierarchy. They want their money.
If you actually look at the spreadsheet, the entire "scripted" narrative completely falls apart under the weight of the evidence:
The Whistle: NLEX actually attempted more free throws than TNT. If the league or the brass wanted TNT to cruise, they wouldn't put NLEX at the charity stripe more often.
The Possessions: The turnovers between the two squads were completely identical.
The Imports: NLEX's import actually delivered a better, more efficient all-around performance than Bol Bol did in terms of keeping his team steady.
You cannot rig a game while simultaneously giving the losing team more free throws and an identical possession share. It’s mathematically impossible.
We love a good conspiracy because it’s easier to digest than the truth. But the reality of this series is much simpler: TNT was always the favorite. I don't care that they were the #8 seed on paper. That was a regular-season fluke. Roster for roster, TNT is deeper, more experienced, and they happen to employ the most unstoppable, unguardable physical anomaly in the entire tournament in Bol Manute Bol. The better, more talented roster won a tight basketball game.
Don't confuse a corporate relationship with a sports conspiracy. TNT didn't get a handout; they just have a better team.
