PBA Free Agency: Meralco bigman is a free agent!

The Meralco Bolts have made a surprising roster move midway through the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup, officially parting ways with veteran forward Raymar Jose to make room for rookie guard Jeff Comia.

Comia, a standout from New Era University, brings youth and additional backcourt depth to a Meralco squad that is currently sitting comfortably at 7-3 in the standings. While the move helps the Bolts lean into a younger rotation, it leaves Jose—a rugged, championship-proven "energy guy"—on the unrestricted free-agent market.

Despite being undersized for a traditional big man, Jose's "no-days-off" mentality and rebounding tenacity make him a valuable asset for teams looking to bolster their frontline grit. Here are three teams that should be burning up his agent's phone:

#3. Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters

The Fuel Masters are currently in the thick of the playoff hunt at 6-4, but their frontcourt remains one of their most vulnerable areas. While Jason Perkins and Johnathan Williams carry the heavy lifting, the bench lacks a genuine "enforcer" who can disrupt the opponent's rhythm.

Jose is exactly the type of big man Phoenix is missing. He doesn't need plays called for him; he thrives on put-backs, screen-setting, and diving for loose balls. His high-motor playstyle fits perfectly with the "blue-collar" identity Charles Tiu is building in Phoenix.

#2. Terrafirma Dyip

Terrafirma has shown flashes of brilliance this conference, but they often struggle with consistency and depth. For a team looking to shed the "bottom-feeder" label, the strategy should be simple: Keep adding established PBA talent.

Jose brings a veteran locker room presence and a winning pedigree from his time with Meralco. Adding him to a rotation that features Christian Standhardinger (once his rights are settled) and Juami Tiongson gives the Dyip a layer of toughness they desperately need when games move into the "grind-it-out" phase of the fourth quarter.

#1. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel

It might seem like the "rich getting richer," but the logic here is undeniable. While Ginebra is finding its form at 8-3, their frontline is aging and has been haunted by health issues over the last few seasons.

With Japeth Aguilar and Christian Standhardinger (rights held) not getting any younger, and the team occasionally leaning small, a "usable big" like Jose is a low-risk, high-reward addition. He provides a physical interior presence that allows RJ Abarrientos and the guards to play more freely on the perimeter. In a grueling playoff series, having a guy like Raymar Jose to give you six hard fouls and 10 tough rebounds is a luxury Tim Cone would certainly appreciate.
