The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is in full swing, and the GenSan Warriors are currently the talk of the town.
Hesed Gabo is proving, once again, that heart and basketball IQ will always triumph over sheer height. He isn’t just a micro-sized scorer; he is a legit, old-school floor general who is currently putting up masterclass numbers every single night.
Through seven games, Gabo is averaging a staggering 11.7 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 1.1 steals, while shooting an efficient 44% from the field and a lethal 35% from beyond the arc. When a 5-foot-9 guard is flirting with a point-assist double-double while snatching 5 boards a game, PBA scouts should be frantically taking notes.
With the PBA always in need of elite playmaking, here are the top three teams that should consider targeting Hesed Gabo for a roster upgrade:
The Titan Ultra Giant have an absolute gem in Fran Yu. Yu has proven to be an amazing, creative point guard who can navigate pick-and-rolls and find open teammates with ease. However, modern basketball demands dynamic spacing, and that is where Titan occasionally hits a wall.
Bringing in Hesed Gabo wouldn't be about replacing Yu; it would be about creating a terrifying, high-IQ guard rotation. What Gabo brings to the table is a much more consistent threat from beyond the arc. Hitting 35% of his triples in the MPBL, Gabo forces defenses to go over the screen, opening up massive driving lanes. A Yu-Gabo backcourt platoon would give Titan 48 minutes of flawless playmaking without sacrificing perimeter firepower.
Look at the Blackwater roster, and you will see a collection of highly talented, explosive guards who can get a bucket at any given moment. But look a little closer, and you’ll notice a glaring structural issue: they lack a true stabilizer. They have scoring guards, combo guards, and defensive wings, but they do not really have a traditional point guard like Gabo.
Blackwater’s offense can occasionally devolve into stagnant, isolation-heavy possessions. Gabo is the ultimate antidote to that problem. He is a pass-first maestro who treats compiling 8 assists a game like a regular day at the office. He knows how to reward big men running the floor, how to find shooters in their pockets, and how to manage the game clock in the fourth quarter. He would instantly transform Blackwater’s talented individuals into a cohesive unit.
For a franchise like Terrafirma, the front office philosophy must remain aggressive and relentless: never stop searching for quality basketball players. The Dyip cannot afford to pass up on proven winners, and Gabo’s pedigree—complete with MPBL championships and an elite statistical resurgence—makes him a prime target.
Terrafirma needs players who understand how to win and how to compete under duress. Gabo’s ability to anchor a undefeated 7-0 team shows a level of maturity and leadership that would instantly elevate Terrafirma’s locker room. He provides PBA-level competency, elite playmaking, and a fierce competitive spirit that would give the Dyip a reliable identity whenever he steps onto the hardwood.
