PBA Game HOT TAKE: Meralco should CHANGE their IMPORT?

The text threads and fan forums are already flooding my inbox, and it’s the same question over and over again after Wednesday night: Should the Meralco Bolts replace Marvin Jones? TNT just drew first blood in Game 1 of the Commissioner’s Cup Semifinals with a 94-89 victory at the Ynares Center. And naturally, the reactive crowd looks at the matchup down low and panics. They see Bol Bol erupting for a monster 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks, and they look at Marvin Jones and call his production "passive." They wonder if a quiet, foundational big man is enough to survive a seven-game series against a 7-foot-3 unicorn who looks like he finally decided to play hard on both ends of the floor.

But here’s why the answer to that question is a resounding, definitive no. You do not panic-swap your import after a five-point loss in Game 1.

Let’s look at the actual reality of the game. Marvin Jones actually bucked a brutally flat start to finish with a highly respectable 22 points and 14 rebounds. He didn’t get blown off the floor. In fact, Meralco was right there. They overcame an 11-point deficit, took multiple four-point leads into the fourth quarter, and were a couple of late-game execution plays away from stealing the opener. Bong Quinto hit a ridiculous four-pointer with under a minute left to trim the lead to three. Meralco didn't lose because Marvin Jones failed them; they lost because Calvin Oftana and Jordan Heading hit back-to-back haymakers during a late 16-4 TNT run.

The big narrative all conference was that TNT wasn’t dominant because Bol Bol was destroying their chemistry, playing selfishly, and frustrating his local teammates. But reports surfaced that they had a massive team meeting to fix the vibes, and it showed. Bol had a conference-high 8 assists. He was sharing the ball, anchoring Chot Reyes’ effort-driven game plan, and playing like a true superstar. When an import with that kind of length is actively trying to buy into a system, he’s going to get his numbers. You cannot stop him; you can only hope to contain the guys around him.

Meralco walked out of that arena with a loss, but they also walked out with blueprint proof that their system works against this juggernaut. They pushed the flagships to the absolute brink. If you swap Marvin Jones now, you throw away months of built-in chemistry, defensive rotations, and familiarity for a complete wildcard. Game 1 was close enough for Luigi Trillo and the Bolts to conclude that they have exactly what it takes to win this series. They don't need a new import. They just need to execute better for 48 minutes.
