I hear the whispers from the fans. I read the online forums.
People are looking at the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and dusting off an old, familiar PBA nickname. They are asking if coach Yeng Guiao’s squad is the new "Introvoys."
If you have been around Philippine basketball long enough, you know exactly what that means. It is the label given to a team that always shows up for the introduction—making it to the semi-finals—but bows out before the main event. They give you a good show, but they don't reach the Finals.
When you look at the raw results, it is easy to see why the label is sticking. Let’s look at their last five trips to the semi-finals:
2024 Philippine Cup: Swept by San Miguel, 4-0.
2024 Governors Cup: Bounced by TNT, 4-1.
2024-2025 Commissioner's Cup: Eliminated by TNT, 4-1.
2025 Philippine Cup: Lost to TNT, 4-2.
2026 Commissioner's Cup: Eliminated by Barangay Ginebra, 4-2.
The Gin Kings just officially closed the door on them, taking Game 6 with a 118-107 victory.
Before you write this team off as just a stepping stone for the league's heavyweights, you need to look a little closer at the trend.
They aren't just showing up and rolling over. They went from getting swept, to losing in five games, to pushing grueling series to six games. There is a clear, upward trajectory. They are getting tougher. They are getting closer.
You also have to be completely fair about this most recent series against Tim Cone and Ginebra.
Ginebra was, without a doubt, the healthier team. In playoff basketball, health is a currency, and Rain or Shine was broke. They marched into a dogfight without their two main centers, Luis Villegas and Keith Datu. Try anchoring a defense against a powerhouse frontcourt without your big men. Try stopping Justin Brownlee—who just put up a massive 31 points and 15 rebounds in the clincher—
On top of that, they were missing their main point guard, Felix Lemetti. When you lose your floor general and your anchors in the middle, pushing a veteran machine like Ginebra to six games is actually a massive testament to the heart of this roster.
The Next Step: Quality Over Quantity
So, where does Rain or Shine go from here?
Coach Yeng Guiao has done a brilliant job of collecting tough, hard-nosed, high-IQ role players. They play hard, they share the ball, and they fight for every inch of hardwood.
But you can only go so far with a roster full of really good pieces.
To take that final step—to shed the "Introvoys" label and finally punch a ticket to the Finals—they need to consolidate. They have a surplus of good role players, and they need to package them into something they desperately lack: a legitimate, top-tier superstar. They need that undisputed go-to guy who can shatter a defense when the shot clock is winding down in a tight playoff game.
They have the assets. They have the system. Now, the front office just needs the courage to pull the trigger on a big trade.
