Are we sure the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters haven't been drinking their own supply? Because if that rumored pre-conference offer of Ricci Rivero for Alec Stockton is still sitting on a desk somewhere, Phoenix needs to pull a George Costanza and pretend it never happened. Burn the fax machine. Delete the email. Change the locks.
Look, I get the Alec Stockton appeal. He’s the "toughness" guy. He shoots 37% from deep compared to Ricci’s 27%. He’s a better point-of-attack defender. If you’re building a team of 1990s Pat Riley clones, Stockton is your first call. But we aren’t in 1995 anymore, and we definitely aren't in a vacuum where marketability doesn't matter.
Here is why Phoenix should hang up the phone:
The "Marketable Star" Theory
In the PBA, there’s a tier of players who don't just provide points; they provide gravity. Ricci Rivero is entering that stratosphere. He’s slowly becoming the guy who puts butts in seats and eyes on screens. In a league where gate attendance and "clout" are actual currency, you don't just trade a budding superstar-level brand for a 3-and-D specialist unless you're getting three unprotected first-rounders and a literal gold mine back.
The Production Leap
Beyond the highlights and the TikTok followers, Ricci is actually producing. The "slashing proficiency" mentioned by our friends at PBA Insider isn't just a buzzword—it’s the engine of Phoenix’s offense. He’s putting up better numbers across the board right now, playing with a confidence we haven't seen since his college days.
The Converge Fit
The rumor suggests Converge "ought to do the deal" because Ricci fits better next to Juan Gomez de Liaño. Of course they should! Who wouldn't want a high-flying, jersey-selling wing who can break down a defense? If I'm Converge, I’m sprinting to the league office with the paperwork.
But for Phoenix? This is a "No-Brainer" in the wrong direction. You have a guy who is younger, more athletic, and arguably the most marketable player on your roster. You don’t swap that for a "much better shooter" who doesn't change your team's ceiling.
If I’m Phoenix management, I’m locking Ricci into a long-term deal immediately to kill those "overseas" rumors. You’ve found a star who actually wants to be the face of the franchise. Don't overthink it. Don't be the team that traded a Porsche for a really reliable Honda Civic just because the Civic has better fuel economy.
