It is a well-known reality in professional basketball that age often dictates opportunity. But every once in a while, a player produces numbers so undeniable that front offices have to stop looking at the birth certificate and start looking at the box score.
Levi Hernandez is currently making that exact case in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).
It is important to remind people that Hernandez is already 35 years old. The TNT franchise was the team that previously gave him a few years to establish himself in the PBA. While that stint may be in the rearview mirror, his current production demands attention. Before taking his talents to Zamboanga, Hernandez was an absolute offensive machine for Iloilo. The numbers speak for themselves: an eye-popping 27.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, all while shooting a highly efficient 49% from the field and 35% from the three-point line.
When a player is filling it up at that historic rate, PBA teams in need of a spark must consider an offer. Here are the top three teams that should be making a phone call.
#3. Terrafirma Dyip
The Dyip have established a solid offensive hierarchy, with Jerrick Ahanmisi currently leading the charge for their starters. However, a glaring weakness for Terrafirma remains their secondary unit. They desperately need an infusion of instant offense off the bench.
The Fit: Hernandez is a plug-and-play scorer who can run with the second unit, carry the offensive load while the starters rest, and prevent those damaging scoring droughts that often derail Terrafirma's competitive games.
If there is one statistical category that defines modern basketball, it is three-point shooting. Unfortunately for the Bossing, they are currently sitting dead last in terms of three-pointers made per game in this tournament. The lack of floor spacing severely suffocates their half-court execution.
The Fit: Hernandez brings an immediate, high-volume threat from beyond the arc. His 35% clip on heavy usage would instantly stretch the floor for Blackwater, opening up driving lanes and making their entire offensive scheme significantly more dangerous.
Out of all the legitimate championship contenders in the league, Magnolia is the one that most glaringly needs an injection of bench scoring. The Hotshots are built on a foundation of grueling, physical defense, but they often struggle to generate easy points in tight playoff-type atmospheres when their primary weapons are locked down.
The Fit: A veteran team needs veteran solutions. Hernandez is battle-tested and wouldn't be overwhelmed by the pressure of playing for a flagship franchise. Adding a 27-point MPBL scorer to their rotation could provide that missing burst of firepower Magnolia needs to keep pace with the elite offensive juggernauts in the PBA.
