PBA Trade Rumors: Blackwater REJECTED a trade offer for Barefield?

The PBA trade rumor mill is spinning at a frantic pace, and the latest report from Homer Sayson at SPIN.ph suggests that the San Miguel Beermen have officially entered the fray for Blackwater’s disgruntled star, Sedrick Barefield.

According to the report, San Miguel is pushing a package that includes Andreas Cahilig and veteran gunner Jericho Cruz to lure the 29-year-old point guard away from the Bossing.

But as the dust settles on these rumors, one has to ask: Is this actually a move that makes sense for Blackwater, or is it a classic case of a powerhouse trying to leverage its depth to strip a team of its franchise centerpiece?

The Asset Mismatch

Let’s look at the "hook" San Miguel is dangling.

  • Jericho Cruz: A five-time PBA champion and former Finals MVP, Cruz remains a reliable contributor. Even at 35, he is logging over 21 minutes a game and posting respectable numbers (9.6 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 2.3 APG). He provides veteran stability and a professional locker-room presence that a rebuilding Blackwater team could certainly use.

  • Andreas Cahilig: A role player who has struggled to crack a deep Beermen rotation, currently seeing limited action at roughly 9.5 minutes per game.

Both players are professional, fundamentally sound, and could help a team's rotation. But the math here feels heavily skewed. We are talking about a veteran bench piece and a situational rotation player for a player who, by most accounts, is a top-15 talent in the entire league.

Sedrick Barefield isn't just "another player." He is a rising superstar in his prime who averaged 21 points per game last season. He is the kind of cornerstone talent that teams build their entire brand around.

As one source close to the negotiations bluntly put it to Sayson: “Ginto kapalit ang tanso” (Gold for copper).

If Blackwater accepts this deal, they aren't just trading a player; they are trading their future. While San Miguel’s veteran-heavy core—CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, and Chris Ross—would get a massive injection of youthful, high-scoring energy from Barefield, Blackwater would be left with two players who are clearly on the tail end of their prime or searching for a role.

The Reality of the PBA Trade Market

In the PBA, we’ve seen unfair deals happen before, and "signature franchises" like San Miguel often have the institutional leverage to make things happen. However, for a Blackwater franchise that is already at a crossroads, trading away a superstar for a veteran package is a move that would invite immense scrutiny.

Are Cruz and Cahilig "reliable"? Yes. But are they a fair return for one of the most explosive scoring threats in the country? On paper, absolutely not.

For now, these remain whispers in the halls of the league office—but if the Bossing front office values their future, they’ll need to demand more than just veteran role players for a "big fish" like Barefield. Stay tuned, because if this trade is finalized, it might just go down as one of the most lopsided swaps in recent league history.
