PBA Trade Rumors: Blackwater young stars are on the TRADE BLOCK!

The PBA trade carousel is spinning at full speed once again, and this time, the smoke is rising from the Blackwater Bossing camp.

Rumors had been circulating that dynamic guard Sedrick Barefield was on his way out, but the reality is much larger. The franchise has officially confirmed that they are placing two of their brightest marquee talents on the trading block.

The Stars Up for Grabs

No less than Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy confirmed to All-Star Magazine that the front office is actively listening to offers. The team is entirely open to dealing away their cornerstones, provided they receive the right pieces in return.

The two primary assets available are highly coveted:

  • Sedrick Barefield: The second overall pick of the 2024 Rookie Draft has been a revelation, operating as the team’s top local scorer with dazzling averages of 21.1 points, nearly four rebounds, and four assists per game this season.

  • Christian David: A versatile 6-foot-6 forward who was selected second overall in the 2023 Rookie Draft. While he possesses immense potential, he has struggled to fully break out, averaging 8.58 points and 5.08 rebounds per game during the Commissioner’s Cup.

Draft Dilemmas and Moving Parts

This sudden willingness to shuffle the deck is heavily tied to the franchise’s future flexibility. Blackwater previously traded away their upcoming first-round pick to the NLEX Road Warriors. To avoid sitting out the early stages of a historically deep PBA Draft—which is expected to feature elite collegiate standouts like Michael Phillips and Nic CabaƱero—the Bossing are aggressively looking to recoup draft capital in exchange for their active stars.

The impending roster turnover is also freezing their tournament preparations. Newly-installed head coach Patrick Aquino revealed that the team has yet to select an import for the upcoming Governors’ Cup, as the coaching staff is waiting to see how the domestic player movements shake out over the next few weeks.

The Fans' Ultimate Fear: Another "Farm Team" Deal

While corporate managers look at asset optimization and draft assets, the PBA fanbase is viewing this development with a heavy dose of skepticism and anxiety.

The timing of this announcement comes right on the heels of the highly controversial trade that saw Jerrick Ahanmisi sent from the Terrafirma Dyip to the powerhouse San Miguel Beermen. For a league already suffering from a massive parity problem, that transaction felt like another instance of an independent franchise willingly feeding an elite contender.

Now that Blackwater is dangling Barefield—a legitimate 20-point scorer in his absolute prime—fans are loudly hoping that the league will not witness another lopsided "farm team" trade. The basketball community is desperate to see Blackwater stand its ground and demand actual, high-value competitive assets or premium draft picks from serious pursuers, rather than serving as a stepping stone to make the corporate giants even stronger.
