The PBA roster shuffle continues to turn heads, and the latest transaction to raise eyebrows is TNT placing veteran big man Kelly Williams on the Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) list.
Now, before the rumor mill spins completely out of control, let’s be realistic: this is almost certainly an administrative maneuver. Much like the recent situation with Jayson Castro, there is undoubtedly an internal "gentleman's agreement" in place between the Tropang 5G and Williams. Pushing him to the UFA list is a procedural step to manage the active roster while they navigate injuries and rotation constraints, rather than a genuine signal that his time with TNT is over.
But in the PBA, hypotheticals are half the fun. If Williams were truly available to the highest bidder on the open market, he would instantly become one of the most coveted veterans in the league. Even in the later stages of his career, his defensive IQ, toughness, and leadership remain highly impactful.
If this were a true open free agency, here are the top three teams that should be aggressively pursuing his signature:

Under the guidance of coach Jimmy Alapag, the NLEX Road Warriors have sprinted to a tremendous start this conference. They have the perimeter firepower and the pace, but their most glaring hole remains in the middle: they badly need a reliable center. While they have been getting by on heart and hustle, sustaining this hot start usually demands a stabilizing interior presence. Upgrading the center position is fully warranted right now, and bringing in a battle-tested veteran like Williams would give NLEX the exact type of defensive anchor they need to secure the paint.

Yeng Guiao’s squad is defined by its physicality, but right now, the Elasto Painters are getting hammered by the injury bug in their frontline. With several big men sidelined, their rotation is growing dangerously thin. Rain or Shine relies on having multiple bodies to throw at opposing bigs to sustain their grueling, high-pressure defensive system. Inserting Williams into that rotation would not only provide a massive stopgap for their injured bigs, but also give Coach Guiao a savvy veteran who perfectly matches the team's rugged, hard-nosed identity.

Sometimes the best roster move isn't about what a player adds to your rotation; it is about keeping him away from your rivals. For the Beermen, the strategy here would be brilliant in its simplicity: remove one of the greatest June Mar Fajardo defenders from their path to a championship. Historically, Williams is one of the few players in the PBA who has the strength, post positioning, and veteran savvy to effectively bother the Kraken one-on-one. By signing him, San Miguel would execute a devastating strategic masterstroke, taking a premier Fajardo stopper off the board and clearing a major roadblock on their runway to another title.
