The Meralco Bolts have officially righted the ship, stringing together back-to-back victories to pump their record to 2-1 in Group B of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup. After a heartbreaking one-point defeat in their conference debut, the Bolts responded like true contenders, securing a tough 122-114 win over Rain or Shine followed by a heart-stopping 116-114 escape against the Blackwater Bossing.
And they did it by leaning heavily on a seamless transition from their substitute import and an absolute supernova shooting display from their backcourt.
Hester Answers the Call
When injury sidelined Jordon Varnado, Meralco needed stability in a hurry, and substitute import Antonio Hester delivered in spades. Over his first two games anchoring the Bolts, Hester has been a sheer force, pouring in a total of 46 points and hauling down 21 rebounds.
Even as Blackwater mounted a furious 22-6 run in their latest outing, Hester's early-game presence—culminating in a monster 25-point, 12-rebound stat line—kept Meralco's head above water just long enough for the rest of the team to close it out.
Did Stephen Curry Possess Chris Banchero?
While Hester held down the paint, Chris Banchero did something entirely unprecedented from deep range.
If you looked at the box scores over Meralco’s last two outings, you had to do a double-take. Banchero didn't just catch fire; he redefined perimeter efficiency. Against Rain or Shine, he connected from long distance, and against Blackwater, he went off for 16 points—highlighted by a blistering shooting display from the league's designated arc. Over these past two games, Banchero shot 3-of-4 against the Elasto Painters and a flawless 3-of-3 against the Bossing.
The kicker? None of those makes came from the standard three-point line. They were all four-point shots.
Banchero is currently scorching the nets at an absurd 86% clip from the four-point line. It forces a very legitimate, slightly panicked question across the league: Did Stephen Curry somehow find his way into the body of Chris Banchero?
When a guard is pulling up from deep and converting with video-game-like accuracy, defenses are completely paralyzed. Banchero’s sudden evolution into a long-range assassin, combined with Hester’s interior grit and Chris Newsome’s clutch game-winner against Blackwater, has the Bolts sitting comfortably at 2-1. If Banchero keeps hitting from past the arc like this, Meralco isn't just a threat in Group B—they're a matchup nightmare for the entire league.
