The Converge FiberXers have officially hit the reset button on their reinforcement. Despite jumping out to an impressive 3-1 start in Group A of the PBA 50th Season Governors’ Cup, the franchise has opted to part ways with Jalen Hudson. In his place steps a highly familiar, high-octane replacement: former NBA standout Jamaal Franklin.
Franklin, who previously suited up for the FiberXers during the 2023 Governors' Cup under then-head coach Aldin Ayo, will make his return under current coach Delta Pineda. He is set to debut in a heavyweight clash against the TNT Tropang 5G at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
While Franklin's individual talent is undeniable, swapping an ineffective, off-ball import for one of the most ball-dominant players in recent PBA history represents a massive—and potentially dangerous—gamble for Converge's team chemistry.
The Jalen Hudson Anomaly: Winning Without an Alpha
To understand the risk Converge is taking, you first have to understand the strange dynamic of their 3-1 start. By traditional PBA standards, Hudson was a massive disappointment. He was remarkably passive for an import, completely lacking the aggressive, shot-hunting mentality that teams usually demand from their reinforcements.
Underwhelming Production: Hudson averaged just 12.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.5 steals over four games.
The Disappearing Act: His passivity peaked in Converge's second game against the Terrafirma Dyip, where he scored a staggering two points.
The Silver Lining: Despite playing essentially four-on-five offensively when it came to import production, the FiberXers won three straight games to open the conference.
Hudson's gun-shy nature inadvertently created a vacuum that Converge’s locals eagerly filled. Without an import demanding 25 to 30 shots a game, the local core—headlined by Justine Baltazar, Justin Arana, and Alec Stockton—was forced to carry the scoring load, initiate the offense, and establish a fluid, ball-sharing rhythm. Hudson was practically playing as an off-ball spacer and defensive connector, which allowed the domestic talent to shine and build immense confidence.
The Jamaal Franklin Experience: The Ultimate Offensive Engine
Jamaal Franklin is the exact opposite of Jalen Hudson. He does not blend into an offense; he is the offense.
This situation is not new for Franklin, who was also called in as an early replacement for Ethan Rusbatch during the 2023 Governors' Cup. During that 10-game stint before being contentiously replaced by Tom Vodanovich ahead of the playoffs, Franklin put up absolute video game numbers:

When you bring in a player who averages 34 points and nearly 8 assists, the entire offensive geometry changes. The offense shifts from a democratic, local-driven system to a heliocentric model revolving around the import.
The major concerns for Converge moving forward:
Stunting Local Momentum: Players like Arana and Stockton have found an excellent rhythm operating with high usage. Will they be relegated to standing in the corners and watching Franklin isolate?
Defensive Buy-in: Hudson struggled to score, but he contributed defensively (2.5 steals) and stayed out of the way. If Franklin dominates the ball but struggles with his efficiency, will the locals maintain the same defensive intensity they showed during their 3-1 start?

There is no denying that Converge's ceiling is significantly higher with a lethal scorer like Franklin on the roster. However, their 3-1 start proved that their local core is more than capable of winning games when given the keys to the offense. If Franklin can strike a delicate balance between taking over games and empowering his teammates, Converge could be a legitimate title threat. But if he reverts to pure hero-ball, the FiberXers might end up breaking a winning formula that didn't actually need fixing.
