The recent trade between the Phoenix Fuel Masters and the NLEX Road Warriors, which sent sophomore guard Evan Nelle to NLEX in exchange for forward Sidney Onwubere, has left many observers scratching their heads. On paper and in practice, this deal is difficult to justify as a fair exchange for Phoenix.
The Value Mismatch
Evan Nelle has been a steady presence for Phoenix, serving as their primary playmaker. In his recent outings, he has logged significant minutes—averaging 20 minutes per game—and provided respectable production with 6.9 points and 4.6 assists per game.
In return, Phoenix received Sidney Onwubere, a veteran forward whose recent career trajectory paints a different picture. Onwubere has struggled to find a consistent home in the league, having bounced through several franchises including TNT, Rain or Shine, NorthPort, and Ginebra before his recent stint with NLEX.
Why the Trade Raises Eyebrows
The disparity in trade value is stark for a few key reasons:
Rotation Reliability: Nelle was a core part of the Phoenix rotation, providing consistent playmaking and floor leadership.
Onwubere, meanwhile, was not a central figure in the NLEX rotation and had only seen action in a handful of games recently, leaving his current impact on a team’s success minimal. Asset History: Onwubere was a free agent just months ago, having been released by NorthPort prior to the 2025–26 season before signing a two-conference deal with NLEX.
When a player is available as a free agent mid-season, their trade value is inherently difficult to peg, making a straight swap for a young, roster-consistent guard like Nelle appear highly lopsided. Strategic Fit: NLEX, under new coach Jimmy Alapag, clearly sought to bolster their roster, but Phoenix seems to have parted ways with a young building block for a player who has yet to prove he can anchor a rotation, let alone replace the production lost in the backcourt.
For Phoenix, this trade feels like the departure of a dependable young asset for a player with limited current trade value. While NLEX gains a promising guard under the tutelage of Alapag, Phoenix’s return for Nelle is, by most metrics, a puzzling move that leaves them searching for answers in their own backcourt rotation.
