But, the assessment about the fairness of the trade is strictly about trade value. When we grade the two teams specifically, we will consider more matters.
PHOENIX-RAIN OR SHINE TRADE
Phoenix Trade: 2029 PHX 1st round pick
Rain or Shine Trade: Gian Mamuyac and 2029 ROS 2nd round pick
Phoenix Trade: 2029 PHX 1st round pick
Rain or Shine Trade: Gian Mamuyac and 2029 ROS 2nd round pick
PHOENIX
The concept of this trade for Phoenix is simple. They traded a future value for a present value. They gave up the difference of that 2nd round pick and that 1st round pick to get Gian. So, that means if they have a better season than Rain or Shine in 2029, the closer those two picks will be and the better the net value that they gain.

For Phoenix, it is all about the quality of Gian. Gian is arguably one of the four most important players of Rain or Shine in their last five semifinals run. And he did that before he reached 27. That speaks a lot about what we can expect from him moving forward.
So, what makes Gian a very interesting player?
His offense is improving. He has added pull-up three-point shot. That makes him hard to guard. As you can see in that picture-flow, defenders close down the driving lane and Gian pull-up.
Defensively, Gian is reliable in locking down any guard in the league. His fundamentals is pristine and he has the length and athleticism to cover ground as he showed in this stoppage of Thompson.
Defensively, what is really special about him is his ability to navigate screen and then combine it with his length and athleticism to do wonderful plays like the one above.
So, Phoenix really got a guard that can be part of their core for the next decade. But, there is a big question mark about this. They traded Evan Nelle, also a young guard who looks like deserving of being part of the core for the next decade, for Onwubere and in the first two games, Sidney did not play!
In short, they traded Evan for basically nothing and now they are paying a trade-down from a 1st round pick to the 2nd round pick, to grab also a young guard! I put some weight to that and ended up with this grade.
Grade: B
RAIN OR SHINE
Once the trade was announced, Gian received a lot of love from fans and analysts. Fans even begun to question how Rain or Shine can even develop a championship caliber team if they always trade a young very good player when they cannot pay him.
This trade is not really that bad for Rain or Shine. I have been the most prominent barker out there about the reality of the supply of guards in the Philippines. The supply is just overflowing. And with that level of supply, the value of guards is just way lower than the other position.
So, getting a 1st for a guard means a future opportunity to grab a quality forward or a bigman, which are harder to find.
Also, take note that the quality of potential pool to join the draft is still peaking. A lot of blue chip prospects has not entered the draft because of International leagues. One way or another, we will reach a peak of that phenomenon and with the help of father time, they will start joining the draft.
There are at least 5 deserving #1 PBA pick and at least 20 deserving 1st rounders who can join the draft anytime because they are playing in other leagues.
And the year that a good portion of them will finally return home could 2029. And if that happens, that 1st round pick that Rain or Shine got is golden.
Grade: B
