The rumors surrounding Blackwater Bossing star Sedrick Barefield have reached a fever pitch, but those hoping to see the high-scoring guard in a Barangay Ginebra jersey may be in for a disappointment. In an exclusive interview with Fastbreak, Barefield’s agent, Rey Punongbayan, effectively poured cold water on the speculation, confirming that the Gin Kings are not among the teams currently pursuing the former Blackwater standout.
Sticking to the Script
For those familiar with the way head coach Tim Cone operates, this shouldn't come as a shock. Cone is a purist of his system, and he famously values continuity over the temptation of adding "big names" to a roster that already functions as a well-oiled machine.
As Punongbayan aptly noted, Ginebra has little reason to disrupt their current momentum. "They just won the Championship, no need to alter a winning formula," Punongbayan stated.
The agent also highlighted two tactical reasons why a move for Barefield doesn't align with Ginebra’s current needs:
Frontcourt Priority: According to Punongbayan, Ginebra’s strength is already firmly established in their guard rotation; what the team genuinely needs is additional frontcourt reinforcement, not another scoring guard.
System Fit: Punongbayan pointed out that Barefield’s specific playing style—defined by high-volume scoring—is not an ideal match for the disciplined, motion-heavy Triangle Offense that serves as the bedrock of coach Tim Cone’s philosophy.
A Situation That Could Shift
While the door currently seems closed, in the fast-moving world of the PBA, "never" is a dangerous word. While the Gin Kings are happy with their status quo, the landscape could change in a heartbeat if the start of the Governors’ Cup reveals cracks in the armor.
If the Gin Kings struggle out of the gate or if injuries force a sudden pivot, the "winning formula" might need a fresh ingredient. For now, however, the organization remains steadfast in its trust of its current personnel. Barefield, meanwhile, remains under contract with the Bossing, waiting for a trade destination that fits both his ambitions and the rigorous demands of a title-contending franchise.
