Former UST King Tiger Nic Cabañero is currently sharpening his skills in the MPBL, but his eyes are firmly set on the PBA. During a recent appearance on The Navs Effect Podcast, the dynamic scorer opened up about his professional aspirations and revealed his deep-rooted fandom for two specific powerhouse franchises: Barangay Ginebra and the San Miguel Beermen.
When asked about his ideal PBA destination, Cabañero vividly recalled the iconic Philippine Cup Finals where San Miguel orchestrated their historic 0-3 comeback against the Alaska Aces. The young prospect expressed his sheer amazement at the famed "Beeracle," noting that watching SMB overcome a seemingly impossible deficit was the exact spark that ignited his intense excitement for the league and cemented his fandom.
He also pointed to the specific players who fueled his passion. Growing up, Cabañero naturally idolized fellow Cebuano June Mar Fajardo, which anchored his love for San Miguel, while also developing a massive appreciation for Ginebra's Scottie Thompson, whom he considers his current idol.
For those of us tracking projections and running the mock boards here at ph-ballgm, Cabañero’s dream of putting on a San Miguel jersey is actually a very realistic scenario. While he is a highly touted scoring prospect, the PBA draft board is notoriously unpredictable. San Miguel currently holds the #12 spot in the upcoming draft. If Cabañero happens to slide toward the end of the first round, the Beermen will be sitting in the perfect position to scoop up a motivated scorer who already deeply understands and reveres the franchise's championship pedigree.
It is a potential draft day steal that makes perfect sense for both the player and the team.
