Despite the heavy rains that recently flooded massive portions of Metro Manila, the mood inside the San Miguel Corp. practice facility in Pasig was overwhelmingly positive this past Monday.
Gilas Pilipinas officially kicked off their preparations for the critical FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers second round, where they are slated to face Jordan and Iran in a pair of crucial home games at the end of the month. But the biggest ray of sunshine for the national team didn't come from the weather; it came from the towering presence of 7-foot-3 big man Kai Sotto finally joining the practice floor.
Gilas head coach Tim Cone did not mince words about his franchise center's arrival, admitting he couldn't help but feel "extremely happy" to see Sotto in uniform.
“First day was great especially because Kai joined us in practice and is taking a break from his schedule to play for us in the Window,” Cone shared in a message on Monday night.
More Than Just Talent: Completing the Scheme
It is easy to look at Sotto's return and simply celebrate the raw talent he brings to the hardwood. However, his importance to this iteration of Gilas Pilipinas goes far beyond just his individual skill set. Kai is the ultimate linchpin for Coach Tim Cone's entire system.
Sotto essentially completes the strategic blueprint on both ends of the floor. Defensively, his massive wingspan and shot-altering presence allow the perimeter players to aggressively pressure the ball, knowing they have a legitimate, 7-foot-3 anchor protecting the paint behind them. Offensively, Cone’s half-court sets heavily rely on a high-IQ big man who can set solid screens, operate effectively as a passing hub from the high post, and command double teams down low to free up shooters on the weak side.
Because Sotto executes all of these specific requirements flawlessly, he unlocks the full potential of Cone's playbook. That seamless fit is exactly why Cone’s praise for the young big man reached new heights after Monday's session.
“As we have said, it's a do or die situation and we're extremely happy that he responded to the call,” Cone emphasized. “No doubt, he's a game-changer for us. I already feel like a better coach with him in the fold.”
The Final Piece of the Puzzle
With Sotto officially locked in and anchoring the middle, Gilas is now just waiting for one final piece to complete their roster.
Naturalized star Justin Brownlee did not arrive on Sunday night as initially planned, but Coach Cone fully expects the four-time PBA Best Import to touch down and join the squad very shortly. Brownlee, who has been nursing injuries and recovering in the US, last suited up for Gilas during a grueling 106-102 double-overtime loss against New Zealand in Auckland back on July 3.
“We are still awaiting Justin's return from the US, but we expect him shortly," Cone noted. "Otherwise, everyone showed up and we got right to work. We have 10 days to prep. We're all excited.”
With a tight 10-day window to prepare for a crucial, do-or-die stretch of qualifiers, having their foundational "game-changer" back on the floor is exactly the monumental boost Gilas Pilipinas needed.
