As the restricted free agency of 24-year-old wing Bennedict Mathurin lingers into August, the LA Clippers find themselves navigating a complex structural gridlock.
According to ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, multiple suitors have made inquiries for the young scoring guard. However, among a wide field of candidates, the Chicago Bulls may hold one of the cleanest, most compelling paths to striking a deal.
“Multiple teams have registered a level of interest in Mathurin to this point,” Siegel wrote. “The New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks are among those who have registered interest in the 24-year-old, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Sources say the Detroit Pistons had also inquired about Mathurin around the time of NBA Summer League but are not pursuing him.”
The Return Expectation: Why Chicago Leads the Field
For the Clippers, executing a sign-and-trade for a talent who averaged 17.6 points per game last season is not an act of charity. Los Angeles management has made it clear that if they facilitate Mathurin’s exit, they expect tangible, rotation-ready value or premium assets in return.
By anchoring a sign-and-trade around Okoro and draft equity (such as future second-round selections), Chicago can offer the Clippers a proven, 25-year-old perimeter defender to step directly into their rotation. For Los Angeles, taking back Okoro satisfies their need for point-of-attack defense while avoiding the long-term luxury tax hit of a $20M+ multi-year deal for Mathurin.
For executive Marc Eversley and the rebuilding Bulls, landing Mathurin would provide a dynamic, 24-year-old three-level scoring engine to pair alongside their young backcourt. With rival teams boxed out by tax aprons or unwilling to part with blue-chip prospects, Chicago holds the ideal combination of cap room and roster assets to turn a lingering free-agency standoff into a major offseason win.
