NBA Trade Rumors: Sixers could target this young center!

The Philadelphia 76ers executed one of the most explosive offseason transformations in modern NBA history. By pairing established All-Stars Jaylen Brown and LeBron James alongside rookie sensation VJ Edgecombe, floor general Tyrese Maxey, and former MVP Joel Embiid, President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey assembled a star-studded starting lineup.

However, a recurring operational threat looms over Philadelphia’s championship aspirations: Joel Embiid’s availability.

Embiid logged just 38 regular-season games last year following a 19-game campaign the season prior. While his per-minute production remains elite (26.9 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 3.9 APG), relying on unproven developmental reserves during Embiid’s workload management nights is a massive tactical gamble.

To bridge that gap, NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that rival teams—including the New York Knicks—have actively inquired about 22-year-old New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi. For Philadelphia, targeting Missi represents the ultimate low-cost, high-impact frontcourt solution.

The Target Profile: Low-Usage, Elite Rim-Runner

Selected 21st overall in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Baylor, the 6-foot-11 Missi turned in a strong NBA All-Rookie Second Team debut before taking on a specialized reserve role during his sophomore season in New Orleans. In just 19.7 minutes per game last season, Missi averaged 5.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per contest. He operates with clear tactical boundaries: he cleans the offensive glass, finishes lob passes out of pick-and-roll action, and anchors the paint defensively.

Unlike traditional backup big men who demand offensive touches, Missi thrives as a low-usage, high-energy enforcer. Slotted alongside dynamic playmakers like LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey, Missi would serve as a vertical threat while anchoring Nick Nurse’s drop-coverage defense when Embiid rests.

The Acquisition Cost: A First-Round Draft Capital Standoff

According to Siegel, New Orleans’ front office has set a firm boundary for suitors inquiring about Missi: a future first-round draft pick.

Because Missi is entering the third year of his team-friendly rookie contract ($3.51 million team option), matching salaries is seamless for Philadelphia. Surrendering a future first-round pick is a steep asking price for a backup center, but for a Sixers team in an absolute win-now window with LeBron and Embiid, trading draft equity for proven frontline insurance is a necessary gamble.

The Executive Verdict

The 76ers possess enough high-octane perimeter scoring with Maxey, Brown, James, and Edgecombe to overwhelm opponents. What they lack is an athletic, interior safety net for the 30-plus games Embiid is guaranteed to miss. By meeting New Orleans’ asking price for Yves Missi, Philadelphia can secure a primary rim protector to keep their championship pursuit on track all season long.
