The recent PBA Governors' Cup clash between the Converge FiberXers and the TNT Tropang 5G was already a high-stakes affair on the hardwood, but an interesting subplot was quietly developing just a few feet away from the action.
Spotted sitting directly behind the Converge bench was none other than explosive guard Encho Serrano.
For keen observers of the Philippine basketball landscape, Serrano’s presence in the FiberXers' camp immediately set off alarm bells and fueled intense speculation about a potential PBA comeback. However, if a reunion is indeed in the works, it will require some serious maneuvering in the front office.
The Pampanga Connection: Coach Delta and His Protégé
To understand why Serrano was sitting behind the Converge bench, you only need to look at who is drawing up the plays for the FiberXers: Head Coach Delta Pineda.
Serrano and Coach Delta share a deep, highly successful history rooted in Pampanga. When Serrano temporarily stepped away from the PBA spotlight, he thrived under Pineda’s system in the grassroots and regional leagues. He became a focal point for the Pampanga Delta in the NBL and later helped lead the Pampanga Giant Lanterns to an MPBL Championship in 2023.
Coach Delta knows exactly how to maximize Serrano’s relentless driving ability, fearless scoring, and high-energy play. With Pineda now calling the shots for Converge, it makes perfect sense that the FiberXers would be highly interested in bringing the Apalit, Pampanga native back to the big league to inject instant offense into their rotation.
The Roadblock: The Phoenix Fuel Masters' Rights
While the mutual interest between Serrano and Coach Delta might be obvious, making the signing official is far from simple.
Serrano is currently a free agent, but he is a restricted free agent in the PBA.
When Serrano’s one-year rookie contract expired in 2023, the Phoenix Fuel Masters formally offered him a two-year contract extension. Serrano ultimately declined the offer, opting instead to return to his roots and play in the MPBL. However, because Phoenix made a qualifying offer, the franchise effectively locked down his PBA playing rights.
He cannot simply walk into the Converge locker room and sign a contract. In the eyes of the PBA, he still belongs to Phoenix.
The Path Forward: Time to Make a Trade
If Converge is serious about reuniting Serrano with his former coach, they have only one path forward: they must negotiate a trade with the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Phoenix is well aware of the value Serrano holds. During his rookie campaign, he averaged double digits in scoring, proved he could take over games in the clutch, and earned a spot on the PBA All-Rookie Team. The Fuel Masters are not going to hand over his playing rights for free.
To pry those rights away, Converge will likely have to surrender future draft capital or part with a rotational player that fits Phoenix's current rebuilding timeline.
Serrano’s appearance behind the Converge bench is the strongest indication yet that he is ready to make his long-awaited return to the PBA. The ball is now squarely in the court of the Converge front office. If they want Coach Delta's trusted explosive scorer in a FiberXers jersey, it is time to pick up the phone and make a deal with Phoenix.
