Riley Grigsby stepped into one of the most challenging roles in Philippine basketball, and despite holding his own, his initial run as Barangay Ginebra's import has paused. With the team heading into a weeks-long break, Justin Brownlee is preparing to reclaim his familiar spot when the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup group stage resumes in October.
While Grigsby's individual performance was commendable, a closer look at the team's dynamic reveals a significant disconnect on the floor.
The Brownlee Effect on Team Cohesion
Grigsby produced solid numbers and showcased his talent after coming in fresh off a season-long G League stint. However, the Gin Kings appeared to be operating at less than full capacity when it came to truly incorporating the 26-year-old Seattle University product into their system.
The underlying reality affecting their chemistry was the looming return of the league’s winningest import.
The Temporary Reality: The entire organization knew Grigsby was essentially keeping the seat warm. Brownlee was only sidelined to rest and recover from the physical toll of balancing Gilas Pilipinas and PBA duties.

Head coach Tim Cone took full responsibility for the team's disjointed play. The veteran mentor expressed heavy regret over not coaching better for Grigsby, admitting that they placed the young forward in an unfair situation. Rather than playing like the cohesive championship squad fans are accustomed to, Ginebra struggled to find their rhythm—a situation that was further exacerbated by the absence of former MVP Scottie Thompson due to hamstring injuries.
Looking Ahead: The Standby Plan
Despite the challenging stint, Grigsby’s relationship with the franchise remains highly positive.
The Insurance Policy: Ginebra plans to keep Grigsby on standby. Because he is now familiar with their system and culture, he remains a reliable backup plan should Brownlee face any health setbacks during or after his upcoming Gilas commitments.
The Reset Button: The PBA's extended break—implemented to accommodate the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers and the 20th Asian Games—gives Ginebra a much-needed opportunity to refocus.
