Rumors are currently swirling in the PBA, and the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots reportedly have their eyes set on a rising star to secure their backcourt's future.
During a recent episode of the "NO COOKING SHOW," hosted by veteran sports broadcaster Snow Badua and Spin.ph Editor-in-Chief Dodo Catacutan, it was revealed that the Hotshots have a strong interest in acquiring promising 6-foot guard Bryan Sajonia. Currently playing for the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, the former FEU Tamaraw sentinel has quickly made waves in the professional league.
According to the hosts, Magnolia envisions Sajonia as the ultimate successor to their veteran playmaker and Gilas Pilipinas pioneer, Mark Barroca.
A Rapid Rise to the Pros
Selected as the 39th overall pick in the 2025 PBA Season 50 Rookie Draft, Sajonia wasted no time proving that he belongs in the big leagues.
Before turning pro, he capped off a highly successful collegiate stint by leading the San Beda Red Lions to an NCAA championship, earning Finals MVP honors in the process. Fresh off that collegiate triumph, Sajonia signed a one-year deal with Titan Ultra, where he immediately showcased his competitive edge and readiness for professional basketball.
But with Magnolia heavily interested, the biggest question now looms: Will the Titan Ultra Giant Risers be willing to let go of their prized young talent?
The Rain or Shine Connection and the Mamuyac Trade
Magnolia is not the only team that has recognized Sajonia's massive potential.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao also expressed significant interest in the rookie standout. The Elasto Painters reportedly formulated a trade package that would have sent their team captain, Gian Mamuyac, to Titan Ultra in exchange for Sajonia.
However, the deal hit a dead end when Titan Ultra turned down Rain or Shine's offer. Because the trade fell through, Rain or Shine pivoted and ultimately traded Mamuyac to the Phoenix Fuel Masters instead, securing a Season 53 first-round draft pick in return.
With Titan Ultra already proving they are reluctant to part ways with the 6-foot guard, Magnolia will likely have to construct an undeniable, blockbuster trade package if they want to successfully secure Barroca's heir apparent.
