Following Gilas Pilipinas’ gritty 68-56 victory over Iran in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Sunday night, something incredible happened. Before the postgame press conference even officially kicked off, Coach Tim Cone was caught on a hot mic dropping an absolute bombshell. Cone was overheard talking directly to his 7-foot-3 center about trying to help him with his NBA ambitions.
According to the audio that essentially set Philippine basketball Twitter on fire, Cone flat-out told Sotto, "I'll talk to Miami, see what I can do," and asked if the big man would be willing. Sotto simply nodded in response.
Now, it is genuinely fascinating that Coach Cone chose this specific, highly public moment to casually flex his front-office connections. Maybe it was just a spur-of-the-moment adrenaline rush after a grueling, emotional win. But when you have the most legendary coach in PBA history dropping the words "Miami Heat" into a live microphone, we have to treat it like a legitimate basketball scenario.
The Spoelstra Connection
Here is the thing: Cone isn't just throwing darts blindfolded. The Barangay Ginebra mentor legitimately spent time embedded with the Heat as a guest assistant coach during the 2022 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. On top of that, he possesses a long, established connection with Miami's legendary Fil-American head coach, Erik Spoelstra.
When Cone says he can make a phone call to Miami, he literally has Spo's number on speed dial. That is not a minor detail.
But is it actually possible that Sotto gets signed by Pat Riley and the Heat?
The short answer is yes, because technically, Sotto is an unrestricted free agent. His contract with the Koshigaya Alphas in the Japan B.League officially expired following the 2025-26 season, and the team placed him on the free-agent list in May. He is legally clear to sign anywhere on the planet without a messy buyout complication.
