The Atlanta Hawks continue to refine their roster depth as training camp approaches. In a late-offseason swap finalized Tuesday night, Atlanta officially traded sharpshooting guard Buddy Hield, second-year guard Ryan Nembhard, and cash considerations to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for veteran 3-and-D forward Dorian Finney-Smith.

Rebalancing the Roster: Defensive Size over Guard Congestion

For Landry Fields and the Hawks' front office, acquiring Finney-Smith directly addresses the team's wing depth and defensive versatility.

Finney-Smith, whom Charlotte acquired from the Houston Rockets earlier this offseason, brings 44 games of playoff experience to Atlanta. The 33-year-old forward missed the first two months of last season recovering from ankle surgery and played sparingly in Houston, but his physical 6-foot-7 frame, point-of-attack containment, and career 35.9% three-point stroke give head coach Quin Snyder a battle-tested forward to slot alongside Jalen Johnson and Lu Dort.

Moving Hield also resolves a minutes logjam in Atlanta’s backcourt. Hield arrived in Atlanta via the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors but appeared in just seven games for the Hawks down the stretch. Due roughly $9.5 million this season with a $10.1 million player option for 2027–28, Hield's departure opens up rotational pathways for young backcourt pieces like Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, and rookie Kingston Flemings.

Charlotte’s Angle: Perimeter Shooting & Cap Management

For the rebuilding Hornets, taking on Hield grants head coach Charles Lee one of the league's most prolific perimeter threats. Ranking 15th on the NBA's all-time made three-pointers list, Hield provides high-volume floor spacing off the bench to assist Charlotte's primary orchestrators.

However, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Shams Charania that Charlotte is expected to waive Nembhard to manage roster cuts ahead of the regular season.
