The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel franchise is officially hitting the reset button on its import situation. With the PBA Governors’ Cup currently on a long break, head coach Tim Cone confirmed that the Gin Kings have tapped 29-year-old Jordan Murphy as a replacement for Riley Grigsby.
Grigsby anchored the first six games of the conference, but with the team sitting at a disappointing 2-4 record in Group B of the eliminations, management decided a shakeup was necessary. Murphy arrived in Manila this morning, a development quickly confirmed by a selfie posted by long-time utility staff member Junjun Atienza on social media.
This signing also brings a harsh reality check for the Ginebra faithful: Justin Brownlee is not walking through those doors to save the conference. Brownlee remains sidelined by the multiple injuries that kept him out of the early Governors' Cup and Gilas Pilipinas' recent international windows. When Cone confirmed Murphy's arrival to the Inquirer, he did not address Brownlee's status, signaling that the team is fully moving forward with their new reinforcement.
By all accounts, Murphy looks like a promising, highly productive addition to the roster. But if fans are expecting a seamless plug-and-play replacement for Brownlee, they need to temper their expectations immediately.
Based on his scouting report and playing history, Murphy is not a super-athletic, high-flying import, and crucially, he is not really a floor spacer. Instead, he plays much bigger than his 6-foot-6 frame suggests, prioritizing rebounding and scoring a heavy majority of his points inside the painted area.
By the looks of it, he will unequivocally not be a Brownlee-clone. And frankly, that might not be a good thing for Coach Tim Cone’s system.
Cone’s trademark Triangle offense and Ginebra's current roster construction heavily rely on an import who can stretch the floor, operate from the perimeter, and create driving lanes. Brownlee's magic has always been his perimeter gravity; defenders have to respect his outside shot, which opens up the floor for Ginebra's local cutters and big men.
If you insert an import who is primarily an inside operator and lacks that elite outside shooting, opposing PBA defenses will simply sag off, pack the paint, and dare Ginebra to beat them from the perimeter. If Murphy cannot consistently space the floor, his presence threatens to clog the shaded lane and bog down an offense that is already desperate for a spark. Murphy will undoubtedly bring toughness and interior scoring, but forcing a traditional, paint-bound game into a system desperate for versatility could make for a very bumpy transition as Ginebra tries to salvage its 2-4 start.
