With lingering questions surrounding the health and potential retirement of resident import Justin Brownlee, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel finds itself staring at a massive, roster-defining void. If the 38-year-old legend cannot suit up for the resumption of the PBA Governors' Cup, the Gin Kings' front office cannot afford to wait. They need an emergency import who can instantly salvage their title campaign.
If Ginebra is looking for a certified bucket-getter to rescue their season, the absolute top name on their emergency speed dial should be a highly familiar face: Myles Powell.
The Bay Area Flashback
Philippine basketball fans remember Powell all too well. During the 2022-2023 PBA Commissioner's Cup, Powell suited up for the guest team Bay Area Dragons and completely terrorized local defenses. He showcased an elite, unguardable offensive package that made him a nightmare matchup for every single PBA franchise—including Ginebra during their epic finals collision.
Dominating the CEBL
If anyone thinks Powell has lost a step since his explosive stint in Asia, they haven't been paying attention to the international circuit. Most recently, Powell took his talents to the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), signing with the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
To say he dominated would be a massive understatement. Powell was the absolute driving force for Scarborough, averaging 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, which ultimately earned him the prestigious 2026 CEBL Most Valuable Player award.

Traditionally, PBA teams—especially Ginebra—tend to heavily favor importing massive frontcourt players or versatile wings like Brownlee to anchor their triangle system and secure the boards. At 6-foot-2, Powell is undeniably a guard. In a league obsessed with import size, bringing in a backcourt reinforcement is usually considered a massive gamble.
But Powell is not your typical guard. He brings a very specific, ultra-rare ability: he can serve as the absolute focal point of an entire offense.
Right now, Ginebra's local cast is heavily criticized for being too passive and hesitant to shoot in crucial moments. They desperately need an alpha. Powell is a fearless three-level scorer who demands a double-team the moment he crosses half-court. His ability to break down defenders in isolation, pull up from deep, and create his own shot completely collapses opposing defensive schemes.
By operating as the central gravitational force of the offense, Powell would instantly open up massive driving lanes and wide-open catch-and-shoot opportunities for Ginebra's struggling locals. Replacing Justin Brownlee is a virtually impossible task, but if the Gin Kings need an immediate offensive engine to keep their championship hopes alive, handing the keys to the reigning 2026 CEBL MVP is the most explosive contingency plan available on the open market.
