Kiefer Ravena's departure from Gilas Pilipinas was initially packaged as a standard veteran retirement, but his recent comments reveal a much deeper fracture. During a livestream, the 33-year-old guard exposed the quiet bitterness behind his exit, heavily implying that a lack of support from the national team’s head coach drove his decision to step away from international competition.
“Lalaro ka sa Gilas kung ano-ano sinasabi sa’yo, ‘di ba? Tapos (kung) lalaro ka, hindi ka naman gusto ng coach, ‘di ba?” Ravena stated.
Ravena deliberately avoided dropping a name, but the timeline points directly to Tim Cone. Ravena was a staple of the national program under former head coach Chot Reyes, competing right up through the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila. The moment Cone assumed control of the program, Ravena was instantly dropped from the training pool and official rosters.
From a historical basketball perspective, Cone’s apparent disinterest in Ravena is a massive paradox. Cone’s PBA legacy is built on maximizing the impact of dynamic, score-first point guards. He orchestrated the Alaska dynasty by handing the keys to Johnny Abarrientos, elevating him into a league MVP. Today, Cone is replicating that exact success with Johnny’s nephew, RJ Abarrientos, seamlessly integrating the rookie's explosive playmaking into Barangay Ginebra. Both Abarrientos guards are elite pick-and-roll maestros who break down defenses and score in bunches—a scouting profile essentially identical to Kiefer Ravena.
The disconnect ultimately stems from the specific architecture of Cone’s Gilas program. For international play, Cone prioritized oversized guards with elite defensive versatility and rebounding capabilities—players like Chris Newsome, Scottie Thompson, and Dwight Ramos. Furthermore, Cone was mandated to build a sustained core for a four-year cycle leading into the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. A 33-year-old Ravena simply did not fit the long-term timeline or the specific defensive blueprint Cone envisioned for matching up against global powerhouses.
Ravena has made his peace with the situation. He definitively ruled out a return, even if the team reaches the 2028 Olympics, noting it was his choice to retire and prioritize his mental well-being. After dedicating over a decade to the national program, he is focusing on his professional career with the Ryukyu Golden Kings in the B.League, choosing to spend his remaining playing years in an environment where his contributions are fully welcomed.
