The Washington Wizards entered the 2026–27 campaign signaling an intent to anchor their frontline with ten-time All-Star Anthony Davis. However, late-offseason chatter has revealed a potential pivot: Washington’s reported reluctance to trade Davis could change if restricted free agent center Jalen Duren becomes available via trade.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Hunter Patterson, league sources confirmed that Washington expressed genuine interest in pursuing a sign-and-trade package built around Davis to land Detroit's 22-year-old center.
Yet, despite Washington's willingness to engage, the proposal faces a firm road block.
"League sources... confirmed an ESPN report indicating that the Washington Wizards would have interest in a Duren-for-Anthony Davis trade," Amick and Patterson wrote. However, they added that the scenario "does not appear to be of interest to the Pistons."
The Detroit Standoff: The Midnight Deadline & Max Contract Math
At the heart of the trade chatter is Duren's contract negotiation with the Detroit Pistons. Coming off an All-NBA Third Team campaign, Duren has until midnight Thursday to decide on Detroit's current contract offer.
Jalen Duren's Contract Matrix:
• Detroit's Extension Offer: 5 Years / $200.0 Million Fully Guaranteed ($40.0M AAV)
• Maximum Possible Offer Scale: 5 Years / $287.0 Million
• Alternative Mechanism: 1-Year / $9.6 Million Qualifying Offer (Enters 2027 Unrestricted Free Agency)
• Deadline Constraint: Midnight Thursday, October 1, 2026
While Detroit's $200 million guaranteed offer represents a massive commitment, it sits below the maximum $287 million scale Duren's camp sought. If Duren rejects the deal and signs the $9.6 million qualifying offer, he would play out the season in Detroit before entering unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2027—leaving the Pistons without matching rights.
Despite the deadline pressure, Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon publicly maintained that he expects Duren to remain in Detroit regardless of which path the young center chooses.
Trade Market Congestion & Salary Matching Hurdles
Even if Detroit reconsidered its stance on shopping Duren, Washington faces steep competition across the league.
Duren Suitor Grid & Market Factors:
• Interested Teams: Washington Wizards, Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks
• Detroit's Stance: Firmly declining sign-and-trade inquiries across the board
• Financial Matching Barrier: Absorbing Davis' $58.4M salary requires Detroit to stack multiple contracts
As ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported, both the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks have monitored Duren's availability. Furthermore, taking back Davis' $58.4 million contract would require Detroit to stack multiple secondary salaries and attach depth pieces—a structural hurdle for a young roster constructed around Cade Cunningham.
While a swap for Jalen Duren aligns with Washington’s long-term developmental timeline, Detroit’s unwillingness to engage in sign-and-trade talks makes a deal highly improbable.
