Trade Analysis: Mahindra-NLEX

(c) Inquirer Sports
Coach Yeng Guiao is working hard.

Let us check his first trade this weekend as he successfully grabbed the main man of Mahindra, Alex Mallari.

MAH-NLEX

Mahindra received Kenneth Ighalo, Glenn Khobuntin, Eric Camson, 2020 2nd round pick
NLEX received Alex Mallari

In terms of their role and usage, NLEX wins this trade in a landslide. But, if you consider the other aspects, this is not that bad. Mahindra basically exchanged their best player-trade chip to get three young versatile forwards. This is a quality for quantity trade which makes it a fair one for me.

Verdict: FAIR

TEAM ANALYSIS

ROAD WARRIORS
Received Alex Mallari
Sent Kenneth Ighalo, Glenn Khobuntin, Eric Camson, 2020 2nd round pick

Coach Yeng Guiao really wants to end the misery of his team, quick. Getting the best Floodbuster in the league will surely help. Alex is putting up 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 41.4% FG this conference. Coach Yeng love great slashers like Mallari, his playmaking and rebounding are great bonuses.

I do have a problem with him sacrificing versatile players. Coach Yeng Guiao is the best coach out there to maximize a Khobuntin, Camson and Ighalo. But, the same can be said for Alex Mallari. Without coach Yeng, Larry Fonacier, Cyrus Baguio and Jeff Chan may not have reached their peak.

I am pretty confident, Alex Mallari could follow a similar path.

Grade: B

FLOODBUSTERS
Received Kenneth Ighalo, Glenn Khobuntin, Eric Camson, 2020 2nd round pick
Sent Alex Mallari

I understand if you hate this trade for Mahindra. Basketball fans are always allured with quality. Mahindra did not really win this trade, but they did not loss it either. They got a 25 years old hustler in Glenn Khobuntin. They also received a 26 years old forward who had been showing above-average outside shooting this season, in Eric Camson. Finally, Kenneth Ighalo is a hardworking and athletic guy who will be a big help in their practice and can work his way into the rotation.

By the way, they also got a 2nd round pick, and history told us that 2nd round picks can still produce quality players.

The fact still remains though, that their best player failed to net them a player who has legit star-upside.
