The San Miguel Beermen and the Philippine basketball as a whole suffered a huge blow after SMB confirmed that June Mar Fajardo suffered a shin injury.
It happened during their practice last Monday when they are supposed to be on the final possession of a scrimmage with Fajardo handling the ball after stealing a bad pass.
And then it happened.
Before he even rise to score the last two points of the scrimmage, something popped and the whole gym was shut up!
According to Alex Cabagnot, you can even hear a pin drop at that point. Fajardo plunged to the floor and later that day, it was confirmed by the doctors that he suffered a fractured right tibia.
The San Miguel franchise provided an official statement that stated that Fajardo underwent a successful surgery last Tuesday. The healing process will take the entire duration of the Philippine Cup, which means the Beermen will not be having their five times MVP in defending their five straight Philippine Cup title.
The injury that Fajardo suffered was the same as the ones that Gordon Hayward and Paul George experienced. Gordon Hayward suffered it at his first game with the Boston Celtics in 2017-2018 season and it took him almost a year before he returned to the court.
While George got it during a practice of the US national team. It took him eight months before he returned.
The question now is, will Fajardo heal faster than both of those guys to return in the upcoming 2020 season? I highly doubt it. He has a way much bigger body which means his right tibia has more wear and tear than those of George and Hayward.
Especially if you add the fact that is the same injury that sidelined him during the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup.
So, if you are going to ask me if he will be playing a single game in the 2020 PBA season. I am willing to bet that he will fail to do so.
And I believe, that is the right path for the San Miguel franchise to take. They need to make sure that June Mar will be fully healed, not only physically but mentally before they let him return to the playing court.
By the way, during that 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, they have Christian Standhardinger and he dominated. Can Moala Tautuaa replicate that?
