Javi and Juan Gomez de Liaño revealed their plan in an episode the Prospect Pod of Tiebreaker times. You can watch it HERE.
The brothers decided to sit out the UAAP season this year even though it is already the last eligible year of Javi. Without them, UP now has a much clearer hierarchy with Kobe Paras, Bright Akhueti and Ricci Rivero at the top.
Actually, the brothers signed with Nueva Ecija of Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. Unfortunately, the season this year is already canceled. So, what will they do next?
For Javi, he said that he will play for UP next year. Although, he will still play for Nueva Ecija. That is actually possible because MPBL is an amateur league.
Juan and Javi said that they dream to win a championship for UP, knowing that they have been with the premier school for most of their amateur career. It begs the question though of why did they sit out a season wherein they should have been the most talented team in the league?
Juan on the other hand is not yet sure of his plan. However, he did share that he wants to play in an international league. He said that he doesn't want to regret anything when he reaches old age.
So, it means the brothers may not be part of the 2020 PBA draft.
That could be the wrong decision if we only consider their PBA career. The PBA will be looking for a jolt of interest for the 2021 season, so I expect them to hype the 2020 batch. So, marketing-wise, this could be the best year for the brothers.
Javi is also turning 22 already. It is still a young age that could be one of his biggest selling points.
For Juan, the 2020 draft is not building to be loaded with good guard prospects. Juan can easily be the most hyped guard for that draft.
Overall, I hope they consider assessing their future PBA career because I do believe that they will conclude that this year, is the right year for them to enter the league.
