I am pretty sure you already heard about the rumor from Snow Baduae that San Miguel Corporation may soon takeover our national team in basketball.
What is not clear is the timing of it. Although, there is a good chance that it will not happen before 2023.
Nevertheless, the biggest question for me is, who will be the coach if SMC successfully takeover the Gilas program?
I am pretty sure that the most popular name will be coach Tim Cone. And for me, he is really deserving in terms of overall ability.
I do not think there is a current PBA star out there who will say no to a coach Tim Cone.
If the age is your concern, coach Chito Victolero of Magnolia is more than deserving for the job. There is a good argument that he is the best in terms of strategy. Last conference, he turned his team into an offensive juggernaut. And we all know that coach Chito is the best one if crafting a defense.
If coach Tim or coach Chito will be chosen, they will fail to maximize if they will keep their job in the PBA.
Remember that coach Chot succeeded in his first stint with Gilas because he was a full-time coach. He just suffered a historic defeat now that he is handling it as a PBA coach.
Same will be needed if coach Tim and coach Chito will be chosen.
Thus, if coach Tim and coach Chito will not give up their position, SMC should choose someone who can be full-time.
And I just hope that they will consider foreign coaches.
