The Converge FiberXers, known for their official team color of purple, had the privilege of hosting Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy during their recent game against the TNT Tropang Giga in the PBA On Tour. Handy, who was in town to conduct basketball clinics, expressed his positive impressions of the PBA brand of play and praised Converge's performance in their 109-84 victory.
Handy arrived during the second quarter and sat behind the Converge bench, observing the game. He left after the third quarter but expressed his excitement about working with the FiberXers during a special training session scheduled for Monday. As an expert in player development and a coach with NBA championship rings from three different franchises, Handy's presence is highly anticipated by the team.
Converge coach Aldin Ayo revealed that they have also enlisted the help of a Slovenian consultant, along with Handy, to enhance their preseason training. Ayo emphasized the importance of this period for individual skills development and expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to learn from foreign coaches.
Although Handy's schedule is tight, he expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and the opportunity to experience the basketball culture in the Philippines. In addition to his session with the FiberXers, Handy will oversee a coaching clinic, attend a charity event, speak at a basketball convention, and meet with the UP Fighting Maroons.
The Converge FiberXers are excited about the upcoming training sessions with Handy and the foreign coaches as they continue their preseason preparations. Players like Jeo Ambohot and Justin Arana expressed their eagerness to learn and improve through these interactions, highlighting the value of such opportunities for their development as athletes.
