Al Panlilio, the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, is optimistic about Gilas Pilipinas' preparations for the Fiba Basketball World Cup. He aims for the team to secure a minimum of two wins, which could potentially lead to an Olympic spot in the following year.
During the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum held at the Meralco compound, Panlilio expressed confidence in Gilas Pilipinas' capacity to perform well in the Fiba Basketball World Cup. He based this optimism on the team's dedicated preparations over the past three months.
Panlilio conveyed his expectations during a recent Gilas Pilipinas practice. He emphasized his belief in the team's potential and the aspiration for at least two victories, citing previous World Cup performances and the desire to improve upon them.
In the World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas will face strong opponents, including matches against the Dominican Republic, Angola, and Italy during the group stage.
Achieving two wins during the group stage could potentially propel Gilas Pilipinas further in the tournament. Additionally, securing two victories throughout the competition could position them as the top team in Asia, opening the door to securing a coveted spot in the Olympics.
I doubt it. If I am forced to make a portion of my wealth to put as a bet, I will only go 5%. In the current bracket, Gilas will aim to get that two wins against Angola and Dominican Republic.
Two teams who are bigger than Gilas and maybe even better in overall skill level. Karl-Anthony Towns will be there for the Dominican Republic.
