The Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (HAGOC) has rejected Gilipinas Pilipinas' request to add Calvin Abueva and Jason Perkins to the 12-man basketball roster. This decision follows changes made to the lineup under new coach Tim Cone, with both Abueva and Perkins being handpicked as replacements for Jamie Malonzo and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, who were ruled out due to injuries. HAGOC's unsympathetic stance was evident during the final Delegation Registration Meeting (DRM) on Sunday.
Furthermore, there are concerns within the Gilas camp that Terrence Romeo and Mo Tautuaa may also face expulsion from the lineup. However, the reasons for this potential exclusion remain unclear. POC president Bambol Tolentino is set to personally appeal Gilas' case in Hangzhou, offering a final hope for the team.
If the appeal fails, and combined with the potential exclusions of Romeo and Tautuaa, Gilas could be left with only eight players just five days before the competition begins.
To address this, CJ Perez, along with Marcio Lassiter, Chris Ross, Arvin Tolentino, and Kevin Alas, have been added to the Gilas Pilipinas roster for the 19th Asian Games. These replacement players were named by the PBA Board and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) as contingencies in case Abueva, Romeo, Tautuaa, and Perkins are not cleared to play by HAGOC.
It's worth noting that the country had submitted two different player lists to HAGOC, with the first containing a total of 60 players, including Romeo and Tautuaa. A second list, which Coach Cone had just learned about five days ago, did not feature either player, and the names of Perkins and Abueva were not included in either list.
Despite the challenges, the team remains hopeful that at least two out of the four players can still participate, although the situation appears uncertain at this point.
But what I do not understand is that why are the Pinoy fans blaming China?
We are talking about Sports here. They have all the right to reject the proposal of the Philippines knowing that they are actually changing their line-up due to bad preparation and decision making!
Stop blaming China. Blame the right people who created the mess!
