Justin Brownlee has reportedly tested positive in a doping test conducted during the 19th Asian Games, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA).
The ITA revealed that a sample collected from the Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player indicated an "adverse analytical finding for Carboxy-THC, a specified prohibited substance according to the prohibited list of the World Anti-Doping Agency."
The sample was collected on October 7, with the China Anti-Doping Agency acting as the sample collection authority. Brownlee has been informed of the situation and has the right to request the analysis of the B-samples.
Notably, Jordan's Sami Bzai also failed his doping test, with his sample collected on the same day. The ITA found that Bzai's sample contained a dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone metabolite, which is a non-specified prohibited substance according to WADA's list.
Both Brownlee and Bzai were subjected to testing a day after the Philippines and Jordan competed in the gold medal match, which Gilas Pilipinas won 70-60.
The ITA has referred the matter to the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
It's worth noting that Brownlee is the second Philippine athlete to fail a doping test, following Ariana Evangelista of cycling, who was placed under provisional suspension by the ITA.
