In a surprising turn of events, Blackwater has secured a trade for Rey Nambatac, the former Letran star. The deal was agreed upon with Rain or Shine on Valentine’s Day, with Blackwater trading a first-round pick they acquired from TNT for the rights to Nambatac.
For the fans of Snow Badua, they are not surprised because Snow explained already in his most recent podcast that Rain or Shine wants a first round pick for Rey.
Prior to the news of the Blackwater trade, TNT had also shown interest in Nambatac, looking to fill the scoring void left by Mikey Williams. However, with the release of Baser Amer following a contract impasse, Blackwater may have a pressing need for Nambatac’s scoring prowess.
Blackwater has been actively reshuffling its roster in the weeks leading up to the Philippine Cup. Despite losing Amer to free agency, the franchise managed to sign two-time MVP James Yap to a one-year contract, in addition to an endorsement deal. Yap, who spent the last seven years of his illustrious career with Rain or Shine, had requested his release papers.
Now, is this trade fair? Considering that the first-round pick is expected to be a late one, likely between the 10th and 12th pick, the trade seems to be a fair deal. Blackwater gets a proven player in Nambatac, while Rain or Shine gets a future asset. It’s a win-win situation for both teams, reflecting the dynamic and strategic nature of PBA trades.

Rain or Shine easily won this traded. They traded the guard that their young-up-and-coming guards are already ready to takeover from. Yes, that 1st round pick could be late but I think it will be worth it as we expect the draft to get deeper. Congrats to coach Yeng Guiao and the management.
Blackwater gets a player that they need. But, is Rey that much of an upgrade from Amer that they just let go in free agency?
