PBA Controversy: All-Star is postponed!

PBA Makes Wise Decision to Postpone All-Star Weekend Due to Security Concerns

In a move that prioritizes safety and practicality, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has officially postponed its 2024 All-Star Weekend, originally scheduled for May 2–4 in Davao del Norte. The announcement was made by PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, who cited rising security concerns in the region as the reason behind the deferment.

“May mga pangyayari na hindi natin kontrolado,” said Marcial. “Security concern. At tiningnan namin, mas makakabuti sa karamihan kaya natin pinostpone.”

The league was preparing to revive the fan-favorite Rookies-Sophomores-Juniors vs. Veterans format, a nostalgic throwback that had many longtime PBA followers excited. However, with the league’s commitment to ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience for fans, players, and staff, the decision to hold off was the right call.

Marcial shared that the PBA is now in discussions to relocate the All-Star festivities to a different province in the Visayas. While the goal is to keep the event alive, time is tight. With the May 12 national elections fast approaching, there is only a small window to finalize a new host.

“On talks pa kami kasi kaunting oras na lang yung pagitan,” he said. “Pero kapag hindi pa [naayos] within two weeks or after Holy Week, baka ma-cancel na ‘yung All-Star natin.”

Last year’s All-Star festivities in Bacolod City drew strong attendance and culminated in a thrilling 140-all tie between Team Barroca and Team Aguilar, capped off by a sensational five-point play from Robert Bolick.

Should the All-Star event ultimately be canceled this year, Marcial reassured fans and players that the league will still contribute to the Players’ Trust Fund—the traditional beneficiary of All-Star Weekend proceeds.

While it’s unfortunate for basketball fans eager to celebrate with their favorite stars, the PBA’s decision reflects strong leadership and sound judgment. Ensuring the safety of everyone involved is always the best play.
