PBA Trade Rumors: Converge and Ginebra almost had a deal!

The Converge FiberXers have been one of the most active teams this offseason, but their latest rumored trade target has left fans and analysts scratching their heads. According to reports, the team attempted to re-acquire Maverick Ahanmisi from Barangay Ginebra in exchange for a second-round pick and Pao Javillonar. The deal, which ultimately fell through, has raised a significant question: Why is Converge trying to get another scoring guard when they already have a formidable backcourt?

The move is particularly confusing given the team's recent acquisitions. In the 2025 PBA Draft, Converge traded up to get the second overall pick, which they used to select top prospect Juan Gomez de Liaño. The team also reportedly re-signed Schonny Winston and is still in negotiations with Mikey Williams, a two-time Finals MVP with a reputation as a high-volume scorer.

With these players already on the roster, one would think that Converge's backcourt is already set. However, the team's attempt to trade for Ahanmisi, a player who averaged 13.7 points in his last season with Converge, suggests that they are not satisfied with their current options.

The rumored trade also highlights the stark contrast in playing time for Ahanmisi with his former and current teams. After averaging 31 minutes per game with Converge, his playing time dipped to just 13 minutes per outing in the Philippine Cup with Ginebra. This is a clear indication that he is not a good fit for coach Tim Cone's system, and a return to Converge, where he was a key player, would make sense for him.

For Ginebra, the decision to hold on to Ahanmisi is also perplexing. While he is a valuable player, his diminished role on the team makes him a luxury that they can't afford. Ginebra is reportedly asking for a first-round pick for him, a price that is deemed too high for a player who is not getting consistent playing time.

In the end, this rumored trade attempt is a head-scratcher for everyone involved. For Converge, it raises questions about their long-term plans and their trust in their current guards. For Ginebra, it shows that they are not willing to let go of a player for a low price, even if he is not a good fit for their system. The PBA universe will be watching to see what happens next.
