PBA Rumors: Phoenix will have a new head coach?

Sudden Reset: Phoenix Parts Ways with Willy Wilson, Eyes Ayo or Tiu

The Phoenix Fuel Masters appear to be heading back to the drawing board. After just one conference at the helm, Willy Wilson has reportedly been let go as head coach, marking a surprisingly swift end to his tenure. While coaching changes are a staple of the PBA landscape, this particular move has raised eyebrows across the league for its timing and the names currently being floated as replacements.

A Brief Stint for Wilson

Wilson, a former PBA standout who transitioned into coaching after a respected 15-year playing career, was appointed as the team’s leader just before the 2025–26 Philippine Cup. He took over from Jamike Jarin, who shifted to a consultant role.

Under Wilson, the Fuel Masters finished with a 3–8 record, ending up 10th in the standings and missing the playoffs. While the record was underwhelming, team insiders suggest that Wilson’s approach was focused on a "year-long transition" and long-term stability—goals that were cut short after only a few months. With management evaluating the rest of the coaching staff, the franchise is now looking toward the collegiate ranks for their next leader before practices resume on January 19.

The Frontrunners: Ayo vs. Tiu

According to earlier reports, the search for a new head coach has narrowed down to two high-profile names from the collegiate and international scenes: Aldin Ayo and Charles Tiu.

CandidateBackground & Pedigree
Aldin AyoA multi-titled coach in the NCAA (Letran) and UAAP (La Salle). Known for his high-octane "Mayhem" system, Ayo brings championship experience and a proven—if intense—blueprint for winning.
Charles TiuThe current CSB Blazers head coach and a rising star in the coaching world. Tiu has gained acclaim for his analytical approach and recent success with Strong Group Athletics in international club tournaments.

Pedigree-wise, there is no denying that both Ayo and Tiu represent an "upgrade" in terms of head coaching experience and hardware. Ayo has reached the mountain top in local collegiate basketball, while Tiu has demonstrated he can manage elite talent and compete against professional-level international competition.

The "Mind-Boggling" Decision

Despite the attractive options on the table, many observers find the decision to move on from Wilson perplexing. Historically, Phoenix has been viewed as one of the more patient franchises in the PBA, often giving their coaching staff time to weather rebuilds and roster transitions.

Giving up on Wilson after just 11 games—one single conference—feels like a departure from that identity. In a league where chemistry and system implementation take time, judging a first-time head coach on such a small sample size seems reactionary. Wilson was arguably dealt a difficult hand, inheriting a squad that had struggled for consistency for several seasons.

What’s Next?

The decision now rests on whether the Fuel Masters want the proven, high-pressure system of Ayo or the modern, tactical flexibility of Tiu. Whichever way they lean, the pressure will be on to prove that discarding the "Wilson experiment" so early was the right move for a franchise still searching for its first major breakthrough.
