PBA Trade Suggestion: Rain or Shine trading for Geo Chiu?

The rumor mill surrounding Terrafirma Dyip’s Geo Chiu is starting to heat up, but not necessarily for the reasons the 6'9" big man would want. After being drafted with high expectations as a potential cornerstone center, the conversation among fans has shifted from "How good can he be?" to a much harsher question: Is Geo Chiu a bust?

Amidst this chatter, a fan recently commented on a post suggesting a massive trade that would send the former Ateneo standout to the league-leading Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Let’s break down the proposal and see if the math actually adds up for Coach Yeng Guiao.

The Fan Proposal

  • Rain or Shine receives: Geo Chiu

  • Terrafirma receives: Santi Santillan, Christian Manaytay, and a 1st Round Pick

The Reality Check: Is the "B-Word" Warranted?

Before looking at the trade, we have to look at the player. Geo Chiu’s production in this conference has been, to put it mildly, underwhelming for a top-tier rookie giant. He is currently averaging 5.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

While the rebounding numbers show he has a "nose for the ball" and utilizes his frame, the 5.5 points per game is a glaring concern. In a league where imports and veteran locals are physically punishing, Chiu is struggling to find his offensive identity. If you can’t score at the rim or stretch the floor at 6'9", the "bust" label starts to stick, regardless of how many boards you grab.

The "Value Gap": Rain or Shine Loses Too Much

When you analyze this trade through the lens of pure "Trade Value," it becomes clear that Rain or Shine loses too much in this deal. * Santi Santillan is a Credible PBA Starter: Santillan isn't just a "piece"; he is a proven, battle-tested forward who can stretch the floor, rebound, and play within Yeng Guiao's complex system. Trading a starter for an unproven rookie is a massive gamble.

  • Christian Manaytay: You’re adding a high-energy young big who provides depth and verticality.

  • The 1st Round Pick: In a 2026/2027 draft class that is expected to be loaded with international and collegiate talent, a 1st rounder is arguably more valuable than Chiu is right now.

The Keith Datu Benchmark

The only way this trade makes sense is if Coach Yeng Guiao sees something in Chiu that the rest of the league doesn't—specifically, potential that exceeds Keith Datu. Datu has already proven to be a mobile, sweet-shooting big man who fits the "modern" PBA mold. If Guiao believes he can mold Chiu into a more dominant version of Datu, maybe he considers a move. But based on current evidence, Chiu is tiers below Datu in terms of offensive versatility and "game-readiness."

The Final Verdict: A Late 1st is Enough

If Terrafirma truly wants to move on from Chiu, or if Rain or Shine wants to take a flyer on him, the package needs to be grounded in reality. Given his current production and the "bust" whispers getting louder, a late 1st round pick alone could be enough to secure Geo Chiu.

Throwing in a credible starter like Santillan and another rotation player like Manaytay isn't a trade—it’s a charity donation. Rain or Shine is currently at the top of the standings because they value their depth and chemistry. Overpaying for a struggling rookie center would be the first major mistake in what has otherwise been a flawless season for the Elasto Painters.

Do you think Geo Chiu just needs a change of scenery and a "strict" coach like Yeng Guiao to unlock his potential, or is 5.5 points per game a sign that he simply isn't ready for the PBA level?
