PBA Import Highlights: TNT found a replacement for Bol Bol!

 It happens that fast.

One minute, you have a 7-foot-3 unicorn running the floor, dropping jaws, and carrying your championship hopes. The next minute, Bol Bol is grabbing his left foot, the diagnosis is a partial Achilles tear, and your entire season is flashing before your eyes.

Suddenly, the TNT Tropang 5G are tied 1-1 with Meralco in the semifinals. Game 3 is in two days. You need a 6-foot-something giant to anchor the middle, and you need him right now.

You hear the rumors. Marquese Chriss, the former NBA first-rounder. But his agent quickly shot that down. "Not going there," he said. You hear about Darius Days. But getting a guy on a plane from the U.S., clearing customs, getting him through the PBA red tape, and teaching him the playbook in 48 hours? It’s a logistical nightmare.

So, what does TNT do? They make the most practical, logical decision available.

They activated Malick Diouf.

Look, I know fans want the shiny new toy from the NBA or the G-League. But in the real world, logistics win. Diouf is 27. He’s 6-foot-11. He has his naturalization papers. Most importantly, he is already here. He knows the climate, he knows the physicality of Philippine basketball, and he was a champion and an MVP with the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP.

When your house is on fire, you don’t order a custom fire extinguisher from overseas. You grab the bucket of water right in front of you.

But let’s be completely honest about what TNT is getting, because the basketball whiplash for the Tropang 5G is going to be severe.

Malick Diouf is about as far from Bol Bol as you can get.

Bol was a perimeter-oriented 7-footer who wanted to dribble, shoot threes, and play like a guard. Diouf is a traditional, hard-hat, lunch-pail center. Just look at his final UAAP season numbers:

  • 12.1 points

  • 13.2 rebounds

  • 1.6 blocks

He is not going to step out and hit a 25-footer. He doesn't have an outside shot. He is not going to thread the needle with a brilliant pass from the high post. That just isn't his game.

What does this mean for TNT? It means coach Chot Reyes has to completely rewire the offense overnight.

For the last few weeks, the locals have been adjusting to Bol Bol's dominance. Now, guys like Calvin Oftana, RR Pogoy, and Jayson Castro have to shoulder the entire scoring load again. Diouf isn't going to help them much offensively, outside of setting some heavy screens and grabbing put-backs. Defensively, he will bring size and rebounding to battle Meralco's bigs, but he isn't going to erase mistakes the way Bol did.

This is a survival move.

The PBA sent out the advisory. Diouf is in. But keep your eyes open, because this is likely temporary. TNT is still on the hunt for a premium import—maybe Darius Days—who can carry them to the finish line.

Until then, TNT is just trying to keep the ship afloat. Diouf might not be the savior, but right now, he is the only life raft they have.
