Listen, I’ve said this for years about the NBA, and it applies to the PBA too: in sports, there are "problems" and there are "solutions." If you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn't be running a franchise.
Right now, the internet is buzzing with this rumor that TNT is looking to swap Bol Bol for JaVale McGee. And I’m sitting here looking at the numbers, and I’m wondering if we’re all watching the same sport.
Bol Bol is currently averaging 38.6 points, shooting 53% from the field, grabbing 15.1 rebounds, and swatting 4.2 blocks per game. Folks, those aren't just "good" numbers. Those are "video game on easy mode" numbers. He just dropped 53 points against Magnolia! You don't replace that. You don't "tweak" that. You build a statue for that.
I get the fascination with JaVale. I really do. He’s a three-time NBA champ, he’s 7 feet tall, and at 38, he’s still more athletic than 90% of the people on this planet. He’s the shiny new toy in the window. But in sports, "new" doesn't always mean "better."
Coach Chot Reyes came out this week—and you could hear the frustration in his voice—shutting this down. He called Bol the "cure," not the problem. And he’s 100% right. TNT is sitting at 6-5, losing their grip on a twice-to-beat edge.
Think about the logic here. You have the most dominant force in the entire tournament. You have a 7-foot-3 "Unicorn" who can shoot, protect the rim, and carry an entire offense. Replacing him because the team is 6-5 is like selling your Ferrari because you hit a few red lights on the way to work.
The issue isn't Bol Bol. The issue is the supporting cast. The issue is the defense around him. You don't bring in a 38-year-old JaVale McGee, who just signed in China anyway, to solve a problem that your 24-year-old superstar is already masking.
TNT is the defending champion.
If you’re TNT, you don't look for a "backup plan." You look for a way to make sure the guys in the local jerseys are playing up to the level of the guy in the import jersey. Bol Bol is the solution. Everything else is just noise.
