MPBL Controversy: Iloilo franchise is revoked and that is a blackeye to the potential of the league!

Let's sit down and talk about the messy, frustrating, and ultimately disheartening implosion of the Iloilo franchise in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

If you were hoping that regional leagues could provide a stable, credible alternative to the PBA, I have some tough news for you. The MPBL has officially revoked the Iloilo franchise and permanently banned its team officers for a litany of failures, including the abandonment of obligations and massive breaches of league rules.

This wasn't just a quiet exit. It was a chaotic, public meltdown that leaves a permanent black eye on the notion that independent regional teams can truly compete with the infrastructure and stability of a major professional league like the PBA.

A House of Cards

Iloilo had returned to the regional stage after a leave of absence in 2025 with big names—players like Vic Manuel, Kyt Jimenez, and James Sena—tapped to give the team legitimacy. But behind the scenes, the foundation was crumbling. The team's problems exploded when a mass exodus of key players occurred during the trade window. Why? Because the franchise failed to deliver player salaries on time—a plague that has haunted MPBL teams for years.

The situation devolved quickly:

  • The team became a "no-show" for games against the Marikina Shoemasters and the Negros Hacienderos, leading to consecutive forfeitures.

  • The league eventually stepped in, citing a "clear violation of its franchise agreement and league rules".

  • The officers involved are now permanently banned and facing potential sanctions for outstanding obligations.

The Integrity Question

But here is where it gets truly alarming. It isn’t just about missed paychecks anymore. The MPBL, working alongside the Games and Amusements Board and their third-party integrity partner, Sportradar, is looking into "questionable" moves that could point to game-fixing.

When you start talking about game manipulation and Switzerland-based tech companies analyzing anomalies, you aren't talking about "growing pains" anymore. You are talking about a crisis of legitimacy.

The Reality Check

This is a massive step backward for the regional basketball dream. The idea has always been to take the game to the provinces, to give homegrown players a stage, and to build a pro-caliber atmosphere outside the metro. But when a team pulls a stunt like this—walking out on games, leaving players high and dry, and triggering game-fixing investigations—it destroys the trust of the fans and the credibility of the entire league structure.

If the goal was to prove that regional basketball could stand toe-to-toe with the PBA, this disaster proved the opposite. It reminded us that professional sports require professional management, financial stability, and unwavering integrity. Iloilo had none of the above.

The franchise finished their run at 2-12, but the real cost is much higher. It’s a sad reminder that if you don't treat your players and your league with the respect they deserve, the house of cards is going to come down every single time.
