The status of Sedrick Barefield remains the PBA’s most gripping offseason saga. In a recent appearance on the Powcast Sports podcast, veteran sports journalist Homer Sayson pulled back the curtain on the intense trade negotiations between the Blackwater Bossing and the Converge FiberXers.
According to Sayson, the two franchises have been locked in a high-stakes chess match, with Blackwater management holding firm in their search for the "right price." While rumors have swirled, Sayson revealed that there have been at least three distinct proposals floated across the table. While he refrained from naming specific players, the descriptions he provided offer a fascinating glimpse into how both teams value their respective assets.
Breaking Down the Proposals
The trade talks seem to be characterized by three distinct "tiers" of value, each reflecting a different strategy for Blackwater’s rebuild and Converge’s push for a title.
Proposal 1: The "Big Name" Pivot Sayson described an offer centered around a bona fide franchise cornerstone—a "big name" superstar. In the eyes of many analysts, this points directly toward a player like Justin Arana. For Blackwater, this would be a move to land a foundational piece who can immediately carry the mantle as the face of the franchise.
Proposal 2: The "Youth and Depth" Gamble The second proposal shifted the focus toward a mixture of potential and bench utility. Sayson characterized this as an offer involving "isang bata na magaling na player" (a talented young player) paired with "isang hindi masyadong magaling" (a role player/reserve). If one were to project this, it might involve a prospect like JC Policarpio representing the "talented youngster," bundled with a role player such as James Laput or Jolo Mendoza. It’s the classic "lottery ticket" approach: banking on the high ceiling of the youth while hoping the role player can find a second wind in a new system.
Proposal 3: The "Proven Commodity" Mix The final proposal was described as featuring "isang player na magaling" (an established star) paired with "isa na magaling din na nag-MPBL at bumalik" (a player who gained experience in the MPBL and successfully transitioned back to the PBA). This points to the likes of Alec Stockton, who is currently a proven star in the league, paired with someone like Aljun Melecio or Bryan Santos—players whose grit was forged in the regional league before carving out niches in the pros.
The Negotiation Impasse
For Blackwater, the dilemma is clear: do they want the single star-power piece (Arana), the future-building youth movement (Policarpio and company), or the proven, gritty rotation players (Stockton and the MPBL-tested crew)?
The fact that these talks are even happening confirms one thing: the FiberXers are desperate to inject elite-level scoring into their lineup by landing Barefield. However, Blackwater knows that in a league defined by stars, losing a player of Barefield’s caliber—a top-15 talent—requires a return that fundamentally changes their team's trajectory.
Until one of these proposals hits the mark, the standoff continues. As Sayson noted, the water is splashing, the big fish is circling, and the PBA is watching intently to see which side blinks first.
