The Meralco Bolts have officially tapped a familiar face to weather the storm, bringing in 36-year-old Antonio Hester to serve as a stand-in import for the injured Jordon Varnado. Following a heartbreaking 98-97 loss to Phoenix in their debut—a game where the Bolts played without an import—team manager Paolo Trillo confirmed that Hester will arrive on Thursday to bolster the frontline while Varnado recovers from a muscle strain.
A Proven, Familiar Hand
For a team needing immediate help, Hester is a safe, albeit temporary, bet. He is no stranger to the PBA, having previously suited up for Terrafirma and Magnolia. During his time as an import, he has demonstrated the ability to be a high-volume producer, with past international stats showing averages as high as 27.1 points, 16.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on 62% shooting.
Trillo emphasized that the decision to bring in Hester was based on "mabilisan" (quick) needs, prioritizing a player who is already familiar with the league's physicality and style of play.
The Valid Question: Can Meralco Pivot Back?
The arrival of such a productive reinforcement inevitably begs the question: What if Hester performs at his peak? If he manages to replicate his past production—where he was essentially a double-double machine—Meralco may face a tricky personnel dilemma. While the team remains committed to Varnado, who is currently day-to-day on the injury/reserve list, the league has seen plenty of "temporary" imports become permanent fixtures if the team finds immediate chemistry and success.
However, the Bolts are treading carefully. Trillo noted that Varnado’s injury is being managed conservatively to avoid a long-term complication. "Those types of injuries, you never know. And if we forced playing him, it could get worse," Trillo explained.
For now, the Bolts’ hierarchy is clear: Varnado is the priority. But in the unforgiving landscape of the PBA Governors’ Cup, where every win is vital, Meralco is hoping that Hester provides enough stability to keep their title aspirations alive until their primary import is fully ready to reclaim his spot. Whether this becomes a short-term bandage or a catalyst for a lineup change remains one of the most intriguing subplots to watch as the tournament progresses.
