Let's talk about the NLEX Road Warriors and a move that could potentially tilt the balance of power in the PBA Governors' Cup.
Here is the situation: NLEX is currently sitting pretty at the top of Group A with a flawless 5-0 record. They just pulled off a convincing 119-107 victory over Converge, fueled by a massive fourth-quarter run. Schonny Winston is dropping 24 points against his former team, Robert Bolick is flirting with triple-doubles, and DeQuan Jones is proving to be a highly effective import. Coach Jimmy Alapag has the offense humming.
They look like legitimate contenders. But if you look closely at their roster, there is one glaring hole: they lack a defensive anchor in the middle who can handle the true giants of the league.
This brings us to Kelly Williams.
The 44-year-old veteran forward/center is currently an unrestricted free agent. Now, conventional PBA wisdom suggests that Williams, who has spent the majority of his career winning championships with the TNT franchise, likely has a gentleman's agreement in place with Tropang Giga management. He is a TNT lifer in the eyes of many fans.
But should the MVP Group—which oversees both TNT and NLEX—reconsider that arrangement and allow NLEX to sign him?
Let's look at the TNT side of the equation. Tropang Giga is currently 3-2 in the Governors' Cup. They just gutted out a 93-89 overtime win against San Miguel, but they did it without key pieces like Roger Pogoy, Calvin Oftana, Jordan Heading, and Jayson Castro. They are battered, bruised, and arguably the most fatigued team in the PBA after making deep runs to the finals in the last five editions of the tournament. While Kelly Williams provides invaluable veteran leadership, TNT's current priority seems to be surviving this injury crisis and developing their younger players like Kim Aurin, who just dropped a career-high 22 points.
Now, look at what Williams could do for NLEX.
If NLEX signs Kelly Williams, they immediately address their biggest defensive liability. Even at this stage in his career, Williams is a proven defender. He has the size, the basketball IQ, and the strength to body up against the premiere big men in the league—the exact type of players NLEX will inevitably face in a deep playoff run.
Imagine an NLEX starting five with Bolick orchestrating the offense, Winston attacking the rim, Jones providing explosive scoring, and Kelly Williams anchoring the paint. That is a lineup that can stand toe-to-toe with absolutely anyone in the PBA.
It might be hard for TNT fans to swallow seeing Williams in a different MVP Group jersey. But if the goal is to maximize the championship window for NLEX while they are blazing hot at 5-0, shifting Kelly Williams to the Road Warriors makes an awful lot of basketball sense. It gives NLEX the final piece of their defensive puzzle and allows TNT to focus on getting their core healthy for the grueling stretch ahead.
